Hey Guys
I have downloaded
Cold.Creek.Manor.(2003).CD1.DVDRip.XViD-ALLiANCE.[LioNetwork.Net]
Discs 1 and 2 and there is no sound at all. Lately a lot of films on shareaza seem to have no sound. I use virtual dub and TMPeng and nothing. Is it me or are there just loads of these about.
Cheers

Hi Xsilver.
ppl who respond to a question with "It's probably just you" are a real 'pein' in the arse. Especially when they add a :)
I have tried many different Audio & Video codecs in the past mainly concentrating on converting whatever to DivX With MPG Layer 3 audio.
To date I have succeeded with tackling everything (even horrible apple .MOV files)....
The only codec which has really screwed me up is bloody XviD that all seem to use AC3 audio. Films encoded with this codec are very popular because it is generally regarded as the highest quality. AC3 goes hand in hand with this as it is the Dolby Digital high quality audio stream codec.
To compound the issue, there seems to be many different version of XviD out there - all slightly different. Not one of my many programs that I use to convert to DivX can handle AC3 on the fly. I think that AC3 uses 5.1 / 7.1 sterio streams instead of just dual sterio streams which may make it a real sod to convert.
Hell I have only just managed to set up a codec config on my PC that can PLAY poxy XviD films (without them appearing with frames merged). (Playing AC3 audio goes without a hitch).
Why the hell the codec for the film can't be embedded into the AVI I will NEVER understand! Christ this would sort out SOOOO many problems.
Anyway (after MANY MANY weeks of chucking my toys out of my pram) this has worked for me in the past (but not 100%), try using VideoEdit Converter to recompress the Audio to Mpeg Layer III
If anyone has tackled XviD / AC3 and has a better response than a lame ass "It's probably just you" please chip in!
Andy.
PS
a real shout does to AfterDawn. EXCELLENT WEB PAGE!
Hitting it with a sledgehammer usually sorts it...

this is a common problem so dont fret. if ur xvid is encoded with AC3 audio ur in luck, there is a program called ac-3/acm decompressor which will allow tmpge to encode AC3 audio without having to decompress the audio to wav first, just download and install this little prog and tmpge will encode your files with AC3 audio without a problem
http://fcchandler.home.comcast.net/AC3ACM/
but if your xvid file uses another audio format like mp3 you'll have to decompress the audio to wav first b4 you encode it with tmpge, there are many programs that can do this, if you want an audio decompressor that is far greater than virtual dub just let me know and i'll send you a link

To my knowledge the AC3 ACM Decompressor only works with Virtualdub, not TMPGEnc. I just tried it myself just to see if it would work. You still have to convert to wav in order to get any sound in TMPGEnc. It's easy enough to do, just open the movie with Virtualdub, go to the audio menu and select "full processing mode", then go to file and select "save wav". Use the wav file as your source in TMPGEnc.
If you are not getting any sound when playing back avi's with ac3 audio simply install an ac3 filter like this one: http://ac3filter.sourceforge.net/

im not here to start a debate about it, but im telling you it does work, and it has nothing to do with vdub. ac3/acm decompressor is the only program that allows encoding of AC3 audio str8 thru tmpge without converting to wav first, since installing it ive never had to convert any AVI with AC3 audio to wav b4 encoding. check with the TMPGEnc bbs, it comes highly recommended.
and also vdub is all well and good, but alot of ppl have problems with it from time to time (sync issues ect.), if you want an audio decompressor that hasnt failed me yet just give us a shout out and i'll send you a link.

If it has nothing to do with VirtualDub then why is it on the site of the guy that made VirtualDub MPEG2? As I said, I tried it with TMPGEnc and it didn't work. Would you mind providing a link to the TMPGEnc forum that explains how to get it to work? No need to PM me. Post it here so everyone can learn. Thanks.

i mean it has nothing to do with vdub because vdub can convert AC3 audio to wav regardless.
some people cant get this to work ive read, but for me it was as simple as download and install, ive had no worries after that. but ive heard that ppl who couldnt get it to work initially were able to get it workin by raising the priority of the AVI VFW compatibility reader(option>eviromental setting>v-fapi plug in), in saying that tho whenever ive installed AC3 acm decompressor to many differant comps with many differant settings tmpge was still able to encode AC3 audio without having to to raise the priority. if raising the priority still doesnt do the trick, well thats a bitta bad luck because in my experience this prog hasnt let me down yet.
some other ppl like xsilver who originally asked the question give us some feedback and tell us if ac3acm decompressor works 4 you.

Your link didn't work. Secondly, your claim that VirtualDub can decompress AC3 without the use of the AC3 ACM Decompressor couldn't be more wrong. It does it because of the AAD, not without it. I'd be interested to know if others are able to have TMPGEnc decode AC3 too because frankly, your credibility isn't very stellar.
