VHS TO DVD-RAM RECORDING PROBLEMS

We have a new, upper end Panasonic DVD recorder that only uses RAM and -R discs. We can get the VHS tapes on either disc but prefer RAM so we can make corrections. Either way, a new laptop PC w/ DVD will not play or recognize either disc. The DVD manual is pretty vague but I've gathered you need to finalize the -R discs which machine appears to do after recording ends yet still no good in laptop. What is missing here? Also, are the RAM discs completely unsuitable for this purpose? THANKS
