Pros: Price
Cons: Will not burn at 8X

There has been some anticipation regarding the release of this media. Once it hit store shelves about a month ago it became a high demand item and remains sold out and/or back ordered at the few outlets that carry it. I got my hands on the first run available which was a 15 spindle pack at $29.00. I proceeded to backup The Matrix Revolutions as I had 4 times prior with Sony 4X DVD-R media on a LiteOn SOHW-812s and got an immediate coaster. The burn could not finalize writing the lead-out well, this was a first but not to fret as I just shrank the file size a touch (which I did not have to do with the Sony disks) and tried again. "Error" the lead-out would not write yet again.
Ok I shrank it yet again and presto it wrote the lead-out but, the disk had errors during the last few chapters during playback. Next I tried a 4X burn and everything went swell. The burn finalized and playback was error free to the end but why buy 8X discs just to burn at 4X? I can hear some of you now: "Dude, you know Memorex sucks so what did you expect?" Ok, I've heard the horror stories but I figured I would give them a shot as there are those out there who've had success. I also looked for a firmware update from LiteOn but nothing has been released. The bottom line is go ahead and try these discs as this could be an isolated incident but after the second failed 8X burn then only burn at 4X and save yourself the headaches. If anyone has had success or a similar story please post.

Or use the unoffical hacked version from the Firmware Forum. It will also be available from my website, along with all other current firmware hacks at http://www.chrismccann.co.uk

Dog gone, I don't know how I missed that firmware update. I tried one burn after the update and so far so good. Thanks guys. I'll update my opinion on the Memorex discs after a few more burns.
