No sound from DVD player if digital

I encoded a DVD using Pinnicle Studio. It worked fine in my one home DVD player. On my other one, I had no sound! I found the problem was because I used a fiber optic cable from the DVD player to my surround sound system. When I disconnected it and went to the standard red/white audio cables to the inputs of the surround sound, I had sound again...

I don't understand all of this DVD stuff. Is there a separate encoding of a DVD area for digital sound and analog sound?
