Hullo!

I got myself a new 160GHD and am in the process of converting all my VHS tapes to DVD. I've borrowed the in-laws brand new VHS player to esure the quality would be as good as possible and it's been very successful for the majority of the projects.

Anyhoo, I capture the vid via MGI Videowave 5, bumping up the output size to max and then convert the avi file to dvd format by using TMPGEnc. In the "Other settings" of this proggie there is a "Motion search precision" option. I change this from the default "Motion estimate search (fast) to "High Quality (slow)" which means it takes 7-10 hours rather than 3 hours or so for 1 hour of VHS tape. Does anyone have any idea how much effect this has on the quality? Am I wasting my time and should just keep it at the default? I'm not even sure what this ""Motion search precision" means but as soon as I see the words "high quality" I click on it.

Thx

The Motion search Precition is Very important for Quality and it also takes up more time the Higher the setting but you should be able to get away with useing the "Normal" setting and never use the "Highest Quality" setting because this does nothing accept make it take Twice as Long....
When the Motion Search precition does is it looks ahead in the File for Movement so it can more efficiently calculate and Distribute the bitrate needed for each frame, the higher the setting the Farther ahead it looks for Motion....
There are Much Faster encoders out there that will produce the same or better quality as TMPGEnc is a Third the Time it takes to encode with TMPGEnc...
You might want to try the "MainConcept Encoder 1.4" because it is Probably the second faster encoder on the Market and is as Good as TMPGEnc for Mpeg2 encodeing or if you are advanced enought you can try something like CinemaCraft encoder SP which is the fastest and Arguably the Best quality encoder on the Market especially for Mpeg2 DVD encodeing but it is Complicated to use and you need to know how to Frameserve to use it properly....well good luck...Cheers

Thanks Minion. You certainly seem to know your stuff. I'll have a search around for those encoders you mention.

Cheers
