Does abybody knows how i can convert vob files to avi?
Also I would like to know which are the appropriate tools for this conversion including extra pluggins. Further I like to confirm that the result from the first question can be imported to pinnacle studio in order to compile a new project. I tried since now the pair dvd2avi and tmpgenc with poor to null results.
Thanks

Hi Oracle,

NVE (NeroVision Express, included in Nero 6) can open a VOB file (but it takes only the first audio track). You can edit the file and then export it to some AVI format (if you have the codec installed) or to MPEG-2. You can even author a new DVD.

But be aware NVE is not the best MPEG-2 encoder around. The results are hardly decent.

You'll get better image quality if you export to a losless AVI format and then encode to MPEG-2 with a standalone encoder such as TMPGEnc.

Of course you'll have to author the DVD afterwards. You can import the MPEG files in NVE and author your DVD. NVE won't re-encode the MPEG files if it detects they are DVD-video compliant (well, not always true, but give it a try).

By the way, what do you mean with "in order to compile a new project" ?

Cheers,

Daba

Hi Oracle,

Here is the procedure:

1) Open the Windows Start menu and run NeroVision Express 2.
2) Select "Make new movie"
3) In the upper right corner, make sure you are on the "Display media" tab.
4) Click on the "Browse for media" button (the one with a magnifying glass) and select "Browse and add to project".
5) In the pop-up window, select your VOB file and click on "Open".
6) If your VOB file contains several audio streams:
- in the preview box (upper left corner) click on the "Properties" button (the last one on the right)
- in the pop-up "Properties" window, select the audio stream you want to keep.
7) Click on the "More >>" button, then on the "Video options" button and make sure the right video mode is selected (NTSC or PAL).
8) Click on the "Export" button.
9a) If you want to create a DV AVI file, select "DV" as the export template.
9b) If you want another type of AVI, select "Custom" as the export template and select the codec (see "Video compressor").
10) Select the output file name.
11) Click on the "Export" button.

I exported a short VOB file (1 min 14 sec) to DV AVI and it worked perfectly.

Enjoy.

Dear Daba,

Concerning step 5 I cannot import the first in row (XX_01.VOB file or the sum included or not video_ts.VOB file from the hard disk. This effect happens also either if I'm trying to insert the forementioned files from a dvd disc. The sympoms are:
NVE refusing to import the selected .VOB files returning errors or if it is not returning an error nothing is imported.
Thus the export button, concerning step 8, remains inactive (gray).
FYI no previw is available (only record audio and properties buttons are remaining active)
Thanks and waiting for more suggestions
Nic

How did you get the VOB files ? Did you rip them from a DVD ? If so, with which ripper ?

Can you play the files (on your hard disk) with a PC player, such as PowerDVD or Media Player ?

Just one software. That would be DVD423C39u29t55ter. So why use DVD423C39u29t55ter? In fact, it's not a true name. If you wanna know its real name you will have to get rid of all of the arabic numerals in "DVD423C39u29t55ter", thn you should find its real name:-)
Why do it? Because some bastards always hack it!
You can download it in http://www.cnet.com or just google it!
Pay attention to: You must delete all arabic digits from DVD423C39u29t55ter, then you will find the software's real name... :-)

Dear friends,
The VOB files have been ripped using DVD Decrypter or smart rip. Power dvd is able to play those files (media player also). I also tried to import the files directly from dvd discs bur the result was the same.
The Nero version that I use is 6.3.1.10 upgrated from 6.3.0.0. the reason that I'm replying with delay is that I have to switch to the office's machine due to the fact that I own only 5.0 and 5.5 versions and I want to confirm first this ability before switch to 6.X.X.X versions
Concerning Charlote's message I'm realy confused...

Hi Oracle,

I can confirm that NeroVision Express can open a VOB file. There is just something wrong on the machine you use, but I cannot say what :-(

To convert VOB to AVI, you can also have a look at DVD2AVI (I never used it).

Sorry Oracle, I have no clue of the problem. My NVE has been working fine from the beginning :-)

Edited: I downloaded it from the internet. It's not the retail version.

Did you try Nero 6 on your own PC ? If no, you can download and install the trial version. Then if NVE does not work properly, uninstall Nero 6 and re-install Nero 5.5.

Daba

Crazy... I feel crazy... (Pink Floyd, The Wall)
Trying to import VOB, AVI, etc files in Pinnacle Studio, I made new discoveries.
(1) Nero Vision Express is not able to import VOB files, even if they are valid for the correspondent menus.
(2) When a AVI file is imported and exported as MPG file Pinnacle Studio is unable to handle it, also in this case the correspondent menus are stating the validity of this type of files.
(3) If you try to open third part made AVI files in Pinnacle Studio the sound is lost.
(4) The same files of paragraph (3) are acceptable in most cases for Nero Vision Express.
(5) The pair of DVD2AVI and TMPGEnc also produces files that are not acceptable for Pinnacle Studio.
After all theese still in search of a program that can rip from VOB to MPG or AVI in acceptable format for Pinnacle Studio.
Thank you all for your time
