Can anyone tell me is it possible to add other bits of a dvd to another when doing a back up. I will give an example so you get the picture. Say I have two music dvds of the same artist. dvd has all the songs I want but dvd 2 has a song or two that I like which was not included. Rather than make two backups can I not add the two songs from disc 2 in the back up of disc 1? If using for example DVD Shrink would I make back ups of both discs and combine the files in the output folder then reburn again using Shrink or Nero or something else. I notice dvds not only have the video file (VTS) but something called Video_TS.BU and Video_TS.IFO. What are these? If combining video from two sources would these files be an issue as they will have the same name when combining files.

DVD Shrink will work very well for combining the two.

Here's an example of how I do this:

I open my first disc with Shrink, and once it's finished analyzing, select re-author. Now I use the start/end chapter select feature to isolate the clip I want. Once that is done I back it up to my HD to a folder with the name of the clip. I close Shrink.

Next,I put the second disc in, Open it in Shrink and find the clip I want, using the same method. After I add this clip to the compilation window on the left, I use Shrink's browser to go find the first clip and add this one as well. Now both clips are compiled! Shrink has a feature to change the order of the added titles so I may change the order so the correct one plays first.

At this point I make sure I have the correct settings to enable burning with Nero, put in my blank disc, select Backup! and Shrink will do the rest.

So the DVD will play in all types of DVD players, DVDs and players have to conform to the DVD specification.

One part of the specification is how navigation occurs. This lets you have wide screen/full screen, complex menus parental control and a all sorts of other features that really make a DVD quite different than a VCR tape.

The InFOrmation for navigation is contained in the .IFO files and, as required by the DVD specification, the BackUP information for the .IFO files is in the .BUP files.

good advice, fasfrank.

Just one thing I would add...

It is important not to mix a PAL title with an NTSC title.
