Hello ...I have a problem adding subtitles to a movie. Sorry for my english...but i'll try to explain myself...
I'm using SmartRipper, DVD2AVI, TMPGEnc, VFAPIConvEN, VirtualDub and the Vobsub plugin as i say above i'm using all these programs to add subtitles into a movie. I don't have any problem ripping the dvd ...my problem comes when i run the frame server in VirtualDub ........ Actually i can see the subtitles in the preview of the output in Virtualdub.......but when i run the frame server a window pop up asking me to save a .vdr file ........... in this step i found some information in one of the forum thread (title Adding Subtitles posted by user NarKona 1 Jan 2002 )...... the solution posted in that thread was to write a name of file with extension .avi.....so i tried this solution but when i try to load this file in TMPGEnc, sends an error that says " can not open or unsupported ".
Well that's all i hope somebody can help me ...... Thanks again

Sorry, but I cant help you with your problem as I myself cant get this to work. I use the same programs as you do, can see the sub in VirualDub under preview, but cant open the second pseudo file (avi) with TPMGEnc.. Have read all there is to read about this here at afterdawn and have also tried some tips at vcdhelp.com. Still nothing.. I have also reinstalled my system, just in case.. But nope! No luck! I'm really getting sick of that "cant open or unsupported" error message..
I just cant figure out what I do wrong.. I'm prob. just stupid! ;)
One question tho for those who read this : How big is the pseudo avi file after starting the frameserver? My file is some 52 bytes big...
I'm gonna go kill myself now..

Thanks for the link, but been there - read that! ;)
Also read all of your other exelent articels. Dont know whats wrong tho.. I have a feeling it's something to do with the framserver (VirtualDub), but not sure. Just think the file it creates is a bit small (about 52 bytes).
Will give it one more try.. :)

That's the point -- it is a file that VirtualDub updates on-the-fly -- you need to leave VirtualDub open and running the frameserver (the box with zeros in it) when you open the pseudofile with TMPGEnc. Once TMPGEnc starts reading the file, VirtualDub "feeds" data to the file on-demand.

Good morning :) hmmm.. It's getting colder here in Norway.. anyway..
I have VirtualDub running. I asked this question so I could mark out my "what could be wrong list?" :) I'm now sure the problem is not with VirtualDub as I started the framserver and this time saved the file as vdr. Then started up another copy of VD and opened up the file and hit F5. It then started to serve.
So the problem must be with TMPGEnc. But what I wonder..? I have tried all possible settings, changed priority and so on. No luck. The framserver file will just not open.
Frustrating is what I would call this.. :)

Try to get hold of older TMPGEnc, such as 12a.

Will look around for it and try that.
Acrodesa : To get subs, I tried DVDx ver. 2.0 (latest I think) today. Load the ripped Vob's with DVDx and framserve that to TMPGEnc.
That worked fine and with subs.. :-D
I'm not gonna give up getting TMPGEnc to read VirtualDub frameserver file, so if anybody have some tips/hints on what could be wrong - please post.

Way better way to do it is to use SVCD.cfm" class="forum_link" target="_blank">DVD2SVCD instead of DVDx -- check out our guide for that. No frameserving hassle or anything -- sorry for not suggesting this at the first place, I thought you wanted specifically to use the "manual method" :-)

It's the manual way I really want to go with this, but as I cant figure out what I'm doing wrong I need to use other tools for now. Hopefully some sunny day I will get it right :)
Tried DVD2SVCD with Harts War, and after some 13 hours it was done, but after burning it was _very_ laggy. Then tried using the mpge tools (multiplex) within TMPGEnc and the new file looked ok, but nero told me that the file was corrupt or something (and when nero speaks I listen..) so I ended up deleting the thing. I now know that I probl. used wrong setting in the "type" field. So I will try this tool again.
Only started with this less then a week ago, but have learned alot from these pages. Also thx alot for input so far :)

Best way to do this manually is actually to skip the VirtualDub and replace it with AviSynth, but as most of our users get pimples of idea to actually WRITE something using text editors, we haven't introduced this method to our guides :-)

Re :) Now that I'm finally able to framserve from VD to TMPGEnc I'm gonna try your suggestion out :) I need more problems you know.. hehe.
But I'm still not able to open pseudo.avi from VD, but if I save the file as *.vdr it works fine! (could not open either file types at the beginning). Exelent quality of the movie - and with subs and all.. :)
