Something has got to be set wrong...I've searched and searched for answers and now I'm completely bald!!

Most probles seem to be due to firewalls and routers or just basically the expectation of new users thinking it to be as fast as kazaa the first time they use it. Well, initially I was one of these people until I looked for solutions and as a result of my searches I disabled my firewall (wish I didn't have to) I don't use kazaa and I've tried a few of the settings.....I'm currently waiting for Delas new tutorial which I'm looking forward to (thanks dela) but I get the feeling that even with his tutorial it still won't work.

I'm on 600k broadband..I've continuously left my computer on and emule running since last friday (apart from 1 day when my electric cut out). I've checked the statistics in emule and so far to date I've uploaded 2.34gb and d/l'd 1011.46mb's. I understand that it takes time and I've been as patient as possible..but something has got to be wrong somewhere?..

If there are any quetions in responce to this message, please bear in mind that I'm very much a newby to emule and probably wont understand any questions asked so please be as patronising and as simple as possible :)

thanks in advance

oh..and if this has already been covered somewhere, my apology's..please point me to the thread where its covered cos I certainly cant find anything other that dealing with routers and firewalls to solve slow downloads

Hehe...sorry mate.

I haven't sorted the problem out

At the moment nothing is downloading and occasionally I get something like 2.something kbps for about 5 mins..uploads are constantly at around 15.blah kbps and this has been going on for a week...My download has peaked at around 10.whatever for the few files I'm D/L'ing, and maybe about 8.? for 1 file..but thats very rare even tho I've got around 40 something sources per file..my ID is 727187951 << is that good? (duh....slap me)

I have a consistant upload but very inconsistant download

lol, no need to be sorry, we are here to help afterall

i have just obtained 512kbps broadband and i am uploading at a speed of 30kbps and only getting about 10-15 on a file with hundreds of sources

so i will try to help all i can, if it isent merely a fault with your firewall of anything is being blocked then it must be what u are sharing, what are u sharing? (size, types)i am only sharing about 600 files and i have a high id --> 2181245913 <---

although that number i am sure isent very high when compared to most uploaders but i have only been doing it for about 3 days tops

you see what matters (if u already know this excuse my ignorance and ignore this)
is if a "client" succesfully downloads a file of you then u get "credits" now these credits help your speeds to go faster when your in a que and when your connected

it helps to share larger files because that is what the system is designed for

this is all i can think of at the moment (yes it probably doesent make any sense to anyone) im half asleep (problems with broadband etc etc)

so get back to me soon as you can and ill try and help you more specifically

FIREWALL: Ok..well...my firewall is disabled and as far as I can gather there nothing else running that could hinder my DL/UL speeds..ie: kazaa.

SHARING: At first I did share my Kazaa "shared folder" in Emule, but as most of those files are audio files (most of which I've since purchased the CD's of ofcourse :P) and having read that single audio files are basically a nono in emule I decided not to share that folder.

So now I'm searching for and downloading old or rare movies which I can't possibly purchase anywhere, so far downloading 11 and sharing what I download...some are paused from downloading to avoid p!**ing the servers off and banning me etc. I do have 4.5gb .ISO image of a recently released film, (only for trying out DVD Shrink ofcourse :P) which I'm reluctant to share for obvious reasons. So as far as sharing is concerned I think I'm ok.

Can I just ask again? This ID "727187951" even tho its not as high as yours..is it still considered high? and how will I know if my ID goes higher?

Thanks again :-)

what firewall do you have? because it is dangerous to disable your firewall when using peer to peer programs, i am sharing currently 16 pieces of software, 57 books/documents covering various things, about a hundred or so pictures, 62 audio files and 50 or so Video clips (about 5 mins long each) and yes the number you have is high - u will see every time u connect to a new server in the log portion

now, what server do you use? i personally use razorback2 because it is fast and full of users and files

a little tip for you download some low quality small porn pictures or video clips (to attract people, because a lot of people get porn of it) so keep that file somewhere out of the way but share it none the less, sharing music (small files) isent what it is designed for but quite a few people like to get odd songs of emule u know like stuff u cant get on kazza ;D

c you in a bit

I used to have Zone Alarm Pro(pfft never again) until someone recommended Kerio Personal Firewall. I have no re-enabled it/

I've also re-added my Kazaa shared folder, but as for downloading porn...I am abit reluctant to do that incase it turns out to be illegal porn (if u know what I mean) I would rather be in trouble for Illegal sharing files than sharing illegal files :P...but it does sound like a pretty good tip :) I'll see if my bro has a porn DVD or vid I can rip :)

Quote: "so keep that file somewhere out of the way"

I didn't quite understand that bit..how do you keep a file that your sharing "out of the way" ? lol.. <duh...slap me again>

thanks again :)

lol, what i meant was put it in like a folder saying PORN in the deep reccesses of your shared folder just so it doesent interfere with anything else.

why u get rid of zonealarm? i have the latest zonealarm Pro and it works perfect with emule and kazza lite ressurection

if you set it up right that is

http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,5747363~root=poll,swapping~mode=flat

glad to see youve re-enabled your firewall, because everybody needs a form or firewall, ;D

are you getting any better speeds lately? got any other questions?

my speed improves sometimes..I got up to about 19k download speed total for about 3 files and on one occasion for just the 1 file..thats the record so far...but on according to servers I connect to, my ID is high, but the name of the server I'm connected to, (bottom right) the "world" icon always shows arrows around it, indicating a low ID..so I dunno whats going on there really..I've already asked the question in my other thread (ID EXPLAINED)

I won't use zone alarm..I had it for quite a long time and was my main firewall..I was having loads of problems with my computer and net connection and didn't understand why until I read a forum about similar problems and it turned out to be ZA causing them. After searching I came to the conclusion that one of the best free firewalls to have is KPF (Kerio Personal Firewall) which is also mentioned in the online manual for emule, although there are as yet no configuration settings to work from.

What Loner said about credits is very important. While increasing you credits over time is important, the credit system is on a per-user basis - and there is a trick to help take advantage of this fact that should be standard practice in eMule: When you download something, after a few megs are down it will show up in your shared files. That is because once you download a chunk, you can start sharing it (ed2k files are downloaded in chunks.) The files you are downloading that show up in shared files are the ones you want people to download, as credits are on a per user basis, you need to swap chunks of your incomplete file with other users downloading the same file. This will expedite the process. Right click on your incomplete downloads when they show up in shared files, and change the upload priority to Release. This gives much higher priority to those files, and so you gain credit with people who have parts of the same file you want. When your file is downloaded, switch it back to Auto. That way you are building credit with the users you absolutely need at that moment instead of users you might never download from! It will still take some time, but you should notice an increase in speeds in this method.

I guess I was blaming ZoneAlarm for my problems rather than blaming my own incompetance, but kerio seems good enough for my needs I think :)

as for the arrows...that was my mistake..I somehow read in the manual that no arrows means 'low id' but I read again and found it was green arrows for 'hi id' and yellow for 'low id' <embarrasment emoticon>

When I used eMule constantly I had about 40-50 kB/s average per file (once they got started good that is.) I used it for months, but then I switched to Overnet for awhile, and now I basically use irc for anything I might need and eMule sparingly (I'm actually running it right now.) I'd like to start running the mule again for the stuff that is harder to find, but I'm sorta holding out for a hashlink site to emerge as the best out of the group like sharereactor once was, those were the days man!

-LoNeR- - That backup of sharereactor is awesome! And I've used it a few times. However, it doesn't have the part I missed most about sharereactor - the forums. That was where everything that fell between the cracks could be found. I'm seeing shareconnector now has a lot of the old sr members and their forums are really starting to kick up, so there's hope. As for the zone alarm thing, I use zone alarm pro as well and it has always worked very well for me; however, when I run emule the mem. usage of ZA grows nonstop until I restart zone alarm - I suggest keeping an eye on it in your task manager. That little peeve has almost made me switch to another firewall (I still may, haven't decided :P.) Check my sig for a guide to irc written by Darthnip. I believe a better guide is in the works for irc, but this is what is available for the moment. I definitely recommend starting with mirc as your client as the guide suggests. Another great idea, in tandum with that guide, is to use the basic irc client in eMule! In eMule, open your Preferences and go to the irc submenu. In the Server textbox, replace what is there with irc.addictz.net . For Nick, use aD nick (makes sense to me anyway lol.) Hit OK. Hit the IRC button. Hit Connect in the lower left-hand corner. In the textbox at the bottom, type /join #ad_buddies . Hit enter. You should then see on the left hand side of the screen a list of nicks in the channel, Dela, Darthnip, Herbs, Ibonic, Mrage (me heh), CoZZa, carefree, TRHR, nik9912 (give or take a few, sorry if I left anyone out lol.) We may or may not be physically there but type away, someone will come eventually. I would also recommend setting up mirc as Darth's guide suggests, and mainly just using eMule as a backup in case you mess something up on mirc and need help fixing it. Also, we will be happy to go over the settings/options in mirc more in depth and get you started downloading stuff. After that comes learning all the commands and getting an add-on script to mess with. All in all it may take a couple weeks before you are truly comfortable, but it is addictive once you are. See you in #ad_buddies!!!!

I'm still having slow downloads :( after almost 2 weeks it should be much faster now..I took the advice of making a porn folder, I'm now sharing well over 100 large files (not all porn lol) and plenty of smaller files..but still the upload is always much faster than the downloads..I may as well just cancel the downloads and just let people upload from me...it rarely goes much more than 8kbs..plenty of sources etc. (as I'm typing upload is 19kb/s and download is 1.2kb/s

I understand what everyones been saying about all the dependancies of how I should be using it etc...but I'm doing everything that I think is expected to gain faster downloads..it just doesn't happen..

the only thing I can think of is the "connection" settings...I'm on 600k broadband through cable tv box...the only option in the connections preferences that is "cable" which gives the download capacitiesand limits as 128kb/s, and the upload capacities as 48kb/s and limits at 44kb/s (emule plus btw)

its getting abit rediculous now, lol what the fudge am I doing wrong?
