Microsoft drops price of 120GB HDD for Xbox 360

article published on 24 March, 2010

Yesterday we reported on the launch of the official standalone 250GB HDD for the Xbox 360. The price is $129.99 and will be available starting on March 28th. At the same time, Microsoft has announced the price drop of the 120GB standalone model, which will be slashed to $99.99 "while supplies last," meaning there probably aren't too many left. The 250GB model is an infinitely better ... [ read the full article ]

$99.99 "while supplies last".... LMAO!

Quick check of Newegg...

Western Digital 1.5TB, 3.5" HDD:$109.99 with FREE Shipping...

Or...you can grab a 2.5" HDD for $99.99...those are all in the 500GB range.

What a joke...

What I don't understand is how they can think that charging $30 less for a hard drive that is less than half of the capacity of the newer model is a deal.

If the 120GB HDD was $50 then I would consider picking one up over the 250GB, but like I said for $30 more it's a no brainer

however it is important to note that both versions are very overpriced when compared to HDDs you can buy from e-tailers.
Unfortunately, the bottom line is Microsoft could give a F*#% about saving you money.

I agree with PantherM this is utter crap we should be able to choose what hard drive we want like the PS3 why should I pay a 150% markup price because it has a Microsoft sticker on it. Hmmmm there console sells right now for $120 and the hard drive for 129.99 Microsoft are you telling me that the hard drives cost more to make then the Xbox 360? i could see that price being fair if it was a 5-600gb hdd but its not.

Can you clone the hard drive with a PC? Is there a proprietary boot sector? Is the hard drive NTFS?

$129 for the 250HDD isn't bad, but....you can make one for roughly $70, so would still be cheaper to make your own. I was expecting to pay over $200 for the 250.

What I mean is it isn't bad considering what I thought it was gonna cost. When the 120 came out it was $159, so I was expecting to pay well over $200. If I didn't know how to build my own 250, I'd pay the $129.99, but since I know how to do it, I'm cheaping out, lol.

With their love or markups, it is amazing that they have not released a 500GB yet...the profit margin on a $260 500GB would be a lot larger than those of a $130 250GB or a $100 120GB.

I guess they are waiting for 2.5" 500GB drives to become junkbin leftovers like the 120's and 250's.
