Quick DVD Ripping question

Ok i have a 16X DVD drive and i was wondering if there was a quick way to rip a DVD....im not sure if its the program but i was ripping a DVD and even though i didn't finish, I estimated it would've taken me 4 to 4 and a half hours to do it. Is this normal for a 16X DVD drive.

What DVD ripping software and Operating system do you use? What are the specs of you computer system?
I found that using windows XP to rip a 5Gb DVD takes about 10mins at 11X, and to rip a DVD on Windows 2000 Pro 5Gb takes 45mins at 2X.

well i use this program that I downloaded.....I am very cheap so I use free programs. The one i use is "Super DVD Ripper". I have a low end computer...a 1.7 Ghz Processor, 512 SD, 16X DVD. Oh and my OS is XP

You may try xilisoft DVD ripper which can be gotten from http://www.xilisoft.com . I've ripped a DVD within 2 hours, but the speed seems to mainly depend on your CPU.

amotion: With DVD Decryptor I can rip faster than that with my burner, which is limited to 2x, so I'd say you should switch software as well. Taking almost 2 hours sounds like you're ripping at 1x. With my Lite-On 166S (16x DVD-ROM) I get speeds ranging from 3.5x to 14x. For your CPU to limit you to that slow a speed it would have to be really old.

OhNine, Welcome to our little Club -
With your system you should be able to rip in 45 minutes or less (probably less).
Make sure you go into msconfig and uncheck all the garbage you don't HAVE TO HAVE starting when you boot up. You do need a max amount of resources to rip and burn - then strap on your seatbelt, we're going to burn you a disc right now -
Here we go, step by step - it can?t fail, ?Uncle? ScubaPete?s can?t miss ?We?re going ta burn a DVD backup right now, youngin?s?? Guide to backing up :P).
First create a folder for your HD backup. Try to put it someplace where you won?t forget it (i.e. C:/All DVD Work/Pirates of the Caribbean).
Next download DVD Decrypter and under mode select ?ISO, Write?. Un-tick the box that says ?Verify?. Where it says, ?source?, you?ll leave that blank as DVD Decrypter will find the location of your backed up DVD file automatically. Lastly, where it says ?Destination?, select the drive where your burner resides. Feel free to close DVD Decrypter, DVD Shrink will open it when it needs it.

Download DVD Shrink. Open it and click ?Edit?, then click ?Preferences? on this page we?re going to select ?DVD Target Size? as ?Custom? and set the size as ?4360MB? - we do this to make extremely sure that our disc isn?t too large. Then under the ?File I/O? tab un-tick ?Enable burning with Nero? then click ?OK?.

Place your original DVD in your DVD-ROM drive and a DVD blank in your burner?s drive (If you have two drives). DO USE ?Branded? Ritek G04, ?Branded? Verbatim or media boasting ?Advanced AZO Dye. All other media could very well cause errors, only the very best media should be used for DVD Video backups. Now is defiantly not the time to put your crappy cheap stuff in - ) - If you don?t know what I?m talking about you better start reading some forum threads to see all the media problems ppl have.
Now let?s burn a DVD. Click ?Open Disk? and analyze your DVD in the usual manner, if you wish, do your editing (or re-Authoring) and do your custom compressing or, if you want a total backup, just let the ?Automatic? settings alone. THEN when time comes, select ?Backup?.
Now, take just a second and under ?Target Device? go to ?Select target device? once there, select ?ISO Disc Image?. NEXT, IMPORTANT, tick ?Launch DVD Decrypter to burn the output image? box. Finally, where it says ?Select target image file?, browse till you find your created folder for your backup and click ?Save?. That?s it ! Click ?OK? and DVD Shrink burns that ISO image to your HD. It then opens DVD Decrypter and has it burn the ISO image to your waiting blank DVD.
Don?t use your PC for anything at all while it?s working.
Enjoy, and when you're done, I'll point you in the direction for getting rid of those trailers and such - once you've gone through this, the other stuff takes about 2-3 extra minutes :)
