I'm not an expert, but I usually choose TDK or Sony and the results are very good (both CD-R or DV-R). If someone has better advice please, it's your turn.

If you can get your hands on some Taiyo Yuden media, it would be your best choice. You can use software like dvd identifier (http://dvd.identifier.cdfreaks.com/) to get the manufacturer string out of the media you buy.

I dont think it really makes a difference, as long as its an 80 min, 700mb cd, i just get the 100 packs for free after rebates all the time.

There is definitely a difference in quality. The cheap discs need to be burned much slower to avoid a slew of C2 errors as well as the fact that they simply won't retain data integrity like quality discs will.
I've tested a fair amount of discs with PlexTools for errors after burning at various speeds and the good stuff like Taiyo Yuden and Mitsubishi Chemical Corp. burn very nicely with zero C2 errors.

There is definetly a diffference. I got a free spindle of Hypermedia due to a rebate. Out of 25 cd's only 4 have worked so far. Thus, even though there free, I have thrown the remaining 75 in the garbage and stuck to my usually brand. Watch those deals there is a reason they are free. THEY DONT WORK AND HOPE U FORGET TO TURN IN THE REBATE.

Well if your stuck & you live in the UK, you can always go to www.blankshop.com & ask the guy who runs the place. He has inside dealings with all the manufacturers & can tell you who makes what brand for what company & what the best cd-r or other media to the point.
I use him & do not have any problems. Wood recommend him to anyone.
Have fun

I agree about the Verbatim's. I also like the fact that I can get them locally instead of online, which is the only way I can get TYs. If you go with Verbatims make sure the package says the dye is made by Mitsubishi or simply says AZO somewhere. Otherwise you'll end up with CMC Magnetics dye instead. I believe their AZO discs are only sold as DataLife Plus, whereas the CMC discs are sold as just DataLife.

Locally I can get Verbatims, Maxells, Sony's and Memorex although Maxell and Memorex seem to be the most common. Of that limited selection I would suggest you set your sights on Verbatim :)

I use Verbatim and Memorex. I found that the Verbatim discs are more scratch resistant than the memorex.

I've noticed through the years that the recording has gotten much better. I say this because majority of the recordable media that you buy will do just fine. I think the main problem that I come across atleast, is the product quality. I say this in terms how long it lasts. It almost seems like the company's are intentional in making products that only between 10 and 100 uses depending on the care of the media. I have noticed that Verbatim has really good products and for longer lasting they offer a nostaligic record type cover.

I've found Mitsui CD-Rs to be the best in my experience. TY are really good too, and I've had pretty good luck with ProDisc. All I buy are printable CD-Rs (inkjet). ProDiscs are pretty cheap & had a bad rep in the past, but their product over the last couple years seems much better than the old stuff.
If I recall, the US Library of Congress uses only Mitsui discs, as do many universities & govt agencies. I use only MAM if the disc is something important.

I used to only use Ridata CD-R discs in the past, however, I think that in the last 3-4 years that the overall quality of the discs has improved by leaps and bounds. The only time I burn coasters anymore seems to be due to my own impatience. Now, I look for the deals - recently I purchased 100 matt-silver sided Ridatas for $12 at Office Max, and they had a $7 manufacturer's mail in rebate and a $5 Office Max mail in rebate! The 100 CD-R discs ended up costing me the .72¢ in tax I paid, plus .74¢ for 2 stamps. $1.46 for 100 Ridata discs was the bottom line, not bad!
