Need Help! Sticking Problems

Hi,
Currently having problems backing up dvd's. Using DVD Shrink to Shrink the movie part of the dvd only and it works fine when i view it on the computer.
I then write it to dvd using Nero, Clone DVD or eASY dvd CREATOR doesn't matter which one and when i play it back in either my computer or dvd player it sticks for several seconds in certain places, sometimes it even skips a bit. Even does this when no compression is applied at all
Tried changing media got new G04 discs even tried a new dvdrw and still the same.
Any ideas, i use an external dvd+/-rw on my laptop?

Hi,
First things first - get rid of Roxio Easy CD Creator. It loves to screw up other burning apps. After you uninstall through Add/Remove, run this little utility to remove all traces:

After removing Roxio, you may need to reinstall your other burning apps to give them a clean start.
Another suggestion would be to update the firmware on your burner. Newer firmwares typically improve media compatibility and writing strategy.
Is your burner running off a USB 1.1 or 2.0 port? What make/model is your burner?

Its running on a usb 1.1 port does that affect it, removed easy cd creator does the same with Nero.
Could it be DVD Shrink??

External DVD burners need a USB 2 port to run correctly. USB 1.1 simply can't supply data fast enough to keep up with the burner.
DVD Shrink is a good, stable program so I doubt the fault lies with Shrink.
I'm not well versed in laptops, but you may look into a USB2 PCMCIA card if your laptop will accept one.

If you've removed Roxio, I would also do the same with Nero, the re-install Nero. If you still have the files(ISO Files) made with Shrink, try burning them with DVDDecrypter. Also it wouldn't hurt to get an updated aspi layer. Most have trouble installing 4.71 in XP, so for a quick easy install go with ForceASPI1.7
As far as your USB 1.1, I used to use an external burner on a USB 1.1, had no problems. Although it doesn't run as fast as 2.0, just make sure your not running any other programs. I used it on my gateway, and that is like a snail. Very slowwwwww. But got the job done.

quick guide using DVDShrink and DVDDecrypter
1) Open Shrink, then open disc
2) click "backup!"
3) change target destination to "ISO Image File"
4) check box to Launch DVD Decrypter
Under "backup options tab", you can check perform deep analysis(suppose to improve quality), but this can make the whole process longer.
5) click ok

Just read and wrote a dvd which needed no compression with DVD Decrypter, and got exactly the same problem. still freezing when played back.
Still using usb 1.1 but have ordered a pcmcia card but waiting for delivery. don't think that is the problem,
Any more ideas. still stuck!!

IDE settings set to DMA? up to date with Windows Update? Last, maybe update your aspi layer.

Wow....I came here looking for a solution to the exact same problem as edcvd.
I am using Windows XP Pro (not upgraded to SP1), 256 MB RAM, Pentium 4 - 1.7GHz, new Sony DVD530A Burner with upgraded firmware, and Sony DVD media (4X), DVD Shrink 3.1
The DVD shrink VOB files play flawlessly...it's just when I burn to media that I get the pauses. The movie doesn't freeze...just pauses periodically and then continues playing.
I was thinking that it was the media, but edvd mentioned that it was not.
I have Roxio5 and Nero 6 on my system and will attempt to remove the Roxio and Nero and re-install Nero.
Have you done this step yet edvd as was recommended earlier?

What kind of DVD player are you using were it freezes? I have a Toshiba SD3800 with progressive scan. It tends to be more sensitive to scratches on purchased DVDs than my cheap APEX in the bedroom.
Which reminds me, I need to test the burned DVDs on the APEX also to see if it is pausing there as well.
I'll keep you posted.

Okay,
It is the sensitivity of my standalone player.
I did some research here at http://www.videohelp.com/dvdplayers.php
and put in my model (ToshibaSD3800) and discovered that others had the same issues with burned DVDs.
I will pick up a Pioneer for playing my backups in the family room!

installed that force aspi, thought it had done the trick but froze again for a few seconds, also experiencing bad picture sometimes where pixels appear even when no compression applied.
How do i update my firmware or have i done this without knowing??

for your firmware. check the manufactures website. Search for your burner.

go to toshibas website it took me a while to actually find it. I am not sure what it is exactly but you do need a firmware because toshibas burners are known to cause problems with the dvds. I updated and it works fine so you might wanna do that.
