I'm going to be posting up a few of the KProbe BLER scans I've been doing since having all the trouble with my Liteon LDW-411S. The difference in the results back then to the results I am getting now are quite astonishing.

But first I thought I'd try to demystify the KProbe BLER scan results a little so you can understand the difference the right media and firmware for your drive can make.

Grogey's Interpretation of how to evaluate a BLER scan result

This is how I interpret the scan results - not to say that is the perfect way to do it but my understanding of it.

The BLER scan provides us with two charts at the end of each scan.
Basis for scan: The BLER scans ECC blocks. If a row of an ECC Block has at least 1 byte in error that constitutes a PI error.

PI stands for Parity Inner - : No larger areas on the disc should exceed 280 PI errors, do not worry too much about high single spikes that exceed 280.

PO stands for Parity Outer - for good discs you don't want large areas on the disc exceeding 30 PO. The PO are actually uncorrectable PI errors. (confusing isn't it?)

[n]Too confusing? Just stick to working on the figures then. For a good disc you want no large areas on the disc to be higher than 280 PI and 30 PO.

I pretty much just concentrated on the numbers until I began to work it out.

Scan result No 1. - Prior to any modification of drive or firmware update......Scan does show drive as 811S - because that is the drive used to read the scan - which of course if after the mods and updates.

Shallow Hal - back-up of original DVD. Ripped to HD with DVD Decrypter, Encoded with DVD Shrink, Written to disc with CopyToDVD.
Note that disc is RitekG04. Burner drive Liteon LDW-411S, firmware version FSOJ

Well not much to say here with PI sitting around 1200 (280) for the majority of the disc, and PI (which are the ones to really take notice off) at 200 (30)

What a mess - and yes it skips and freezes all the way through the second half.

Scan Result No 2. Now here a scan on a burn I did just tonight. For a true comparision I will do another scan when I get my Ritek's tomorrow. But for now a Verbatim will just have to do.
Disc is Verbatim (media code MCC 002). Written to disc at 8x (yes 8x) with Nero Burning Rom.

It is not unusual to have higher spikes at either end of scan when disc is gaining speed etc. Look at difference in figures. The Maximum PI is 195 (280) and over the entire disc the average is 40.54 (280). The PO results are even more startling. Maximum PO is 22 (30) with an average over disc of 0.9 (30).

Quite a change !

Scan Result No 3. This time to see what comparison there would be I burnt the disc at 6x - still above the official write speed of 4x but able to be achieved with speedhack and updating burner to 8x.

This result just about brought tears to my eyes especially after all the duds I've had since buying the burner. Note that the PI max is similar to 8x result but look at those PO - you can hardly see them at all. And note the average PO is zero. There was one single spike of 55 at end of disc but you usually disregard the highest single spike anyway.

[PREVIOUS POST]They seem to have returned for some strange reason!

Not sure why! Anyway a friend is going to house them on his web site for me......so they'll stick around then.
[END PREVIOUS POST]

More groundbreaking news...........well....perhaps not quite groundbreaking...

Of course me being me, I couldn't bear (lol) that I'd have to be reliant on someone else to host my screenshots and have to wait for them to upload etc sooooooo tonight I've done a crash course in starting up a web site with my isp, ftp client, uploading, html etc.

Now I've me own little corner of the web where I can link to my kprobes all I bloody well want!!!

It looks great Grogey. Very nice quilts! My wife has been quilting for about 7 or 8 years. She makes me take a picture of each quilt she makes, because she gives the quilts to family and friends. She would love to have a quilting machine, but the cost is about the price of a great computer, and even if I could afford one, I don't have room to accomodate something 12' long. LOL

Thanks GrandpaBW
My quilting set-up is not as expensive as you would think and I actually hope to be able to have the frame manufactured locally and make my millions! I've got to get a second prototype built with the improvements I've already decided on from constant use over the past few week.

They do import some from America, and you are right - they cost the same as a computer - around $1500/$1600. Mine will be well under half of that [plug] [plug] and the way the actual sewing machine is manourved is a completely different set-up.

Well make sure you let your wife have a look at my site and she might even like to have a look at and join my msn group: http://groups.msn.com/APatchworkPlace

Anyway back to it - I've read other posts where people have had trouble backing up Catch Me If You Can. I've been at it now for over 13 hours - mind you I had a few hours sleep in there somewhere!

I'm wondering if anyone else who had trouble had it in the same postion? Trying to rip onto HD with DVD Decrypter. All files copied perfectly and at superfast speed (now that the drive reads at 14x except for VTS_O1_4.VOB. The disc is fairly new and has no scratches or marks on it. Even so I have still cleaned it several times.

Anywhere from 750kb to 1200kb will copy and then read errors come up. If I retry straight away, no further file transfer happens - but if I wait until the drive is rested and then retry, again a few hundred kb are copied, followed by the read errors. I've actually never ever struck a disc like this before! If I wasn't so determined to get it - I'd abandon the file transfer and run it through DVDInfoPro or KProbe to see what they come up with - I will still do so but once I've got that file!

The read errors started at 319852kb transferred and I'm still plodding along - now only up to 362,548kb. Any other disc I've had with read errors you may have the odd block here and there of disc errors.....but this many???

im following you all over grogey..
seems we have the same problems...well im still at the start of burning....made a disc that skips/freezes and ran kprobe and got an average of...........well it looks just like your first picture with the 1400/200 PI/PO ratings....so im guessing it is my firmware.

cuz also i went to "info/support media/query" and got
"sorry for safety consideration, this function cannot work on a dvd burner until the firmware bug is solved"

should i attempt the 811 upgrade? i dont really care about the faster burn speed....i just need to make these dvd's so i can start selling me production..
once again...some1 help...please

GO LAKERS
