I have a film on mpg format, it plays well enough on Nero Media Player but not on Windows Media Player. When I try to burn it on Nero it gives the error message:
mpg is invalid, need MPEG-1 which was encoded for Video-CD: audio:44.1khz; stereo;224kBit/s.
The following problems were found:
-stream encoding which is invalid for a SVCD
-No audio
-No video
Can anybody help please.

what Nero is trying to tell you is that you do not have a VCD compliant video file. Try using TMPGenc to encode the video to NTSC or PAL compliant VCD or SVCD, depending on which you prefer.. Need the walk-through guides? you are in luck! http://www.afterdawn.com/articles

Found the right files thx. Have followed instructions to the letter but TMPGENC keeps freezing after about 7% completed.

You can ask Nero to reencode the file for you.

Dragoon, the title of this thread is "Nero 5 not reading mpg file" he most likely does not have the proper codecs installed, which is why I left him a link to a webpage that described different problems with encoding using TMPGenc, and how to fix them.
Stopwatch, please let me know if you require further assistance, I'm always happy to help.

Message for VCDJunkie:
If I run VirtualDub 1.3c it goes through a ASF IMPORT FILTER routine and comes back with a box titled VIRTUAL DUB ERROR and the message COULDN'T LOCATE DECOMPRESSOR FOR FORMAT WMV1 (UNKNOWN).
Any ideas mate.

I have many ideas, lets just hope that one of them is correct :-)
try to install every codec package you will ever need.. starting with nimo: http://www.btinternet.com/~nimosiro/
wmv is windows media video or some such name, I do know for a fact it is a microsoft format. you will need to get an updated version of windows media player here: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/players.asp
Also, try to change the codec reader settings in TMPGEnc under Option->Environmental settings->VFAPI plug-in and right click on the DirectShow Multimedia File Reader and increase the priority to 1 or 2 and try open the video.
I have never personally tried to use a .wmv file in TMPGenc, it's possible that Micro$oft has made this a little tougher due to copyright crap.. does not mean it is impossible. If you downloaded this video, why don't you tell me how to download it myself, perhaps I can try encoding it myself, and find a solution that way, that is if nothing else works for you.
Good Luck!

To VCDJunkie
Finally managed it. I downloaded a WMV to AVI decompressor from www.simtel.net/pub/pd/58950.html which is very easy to understand.
Then I just used TMPGENC to convert it back to a mpg with only a little loss of quality.
Thanks for all the tips, its certainly a quick way of getting around the minefield of DVD copying.

Sweet.. I knew it would work for you after you had the correct codecs, just a matter of finding them, anyhow, I'm glad you found it!

I have had the same problem with .wmv files...with tmpgenc and virtual dub. I then renamed my .wmv to .asf and it worked in tmpgenc. tada.....
