My Droid takes fairly nice 480p videos outside, not DVD quality, but better than VHS home movie quality. The sound recording quality is terrible though.
The iPhone will be the same but a little sharper because of a higher resolution, don't over-exaggerate because you dislike a company.
The reason I think the quality will be crap is because Apple stole the camera for the iPhone from Kodak, and my Kodak shoots 720P as well...and it even shoots in an Apple video format. Plus, my camera is a better unit than the one that apple stole (shoots very nice 10MP stills).
I also have a droid, and the quality of 480P on the droid is better than the video quality of 720P on the Kodak. Maybe because it isn't using a crummy file format, or maybe it is just a better video cam (but the still cam is so bad, I can't believe that the camera is better in any way).
