Just a quick survey - what DVD recorders do you use and what rating would you give them out of 10.

I'm think of getting the Plextor 712.

Cheers

You would be better off getting a Pioneer 106 or 107. They are generally the most reliable and economic.

I disagree, the plextor is the top of the line. Costs is not a factor ,when making home movies or copying dvd movies

I'll take the middle ground here by saying that both are of equal quality and performance but when it comes to price, the Pioneer takes the win. I bought my PX-708A simply because I'm a Plextor slut :)

I hold very little enthusiasm for burn speeds over 8X, the time you save is precious little especially when burn quality is considered. I ran into an instance where the same movie files burned on the same G04 media was unplayable when burned at 8X but was fine when burned at 4X. I like assured compatibility over a couple minutes saved when burning.

Hi

Most important factors for me are:

1) ability not to make coasters
2) reliability

I'm not really bothered about burn speed - if its just a case of waiting an extra couple of minutes then thats fine - just put the kettle on!

Would you recommend burning at 4x vs. 8x to ensure that the burnt dvd will play properly?

Cheers

I really do not mind burning at 2.4 x in fact the last time i bought a fifty pack of fuji media was 2.4x,time is no problem . I had last year a nec 1100 a DVD burner and it was a piece of Junk I could take it no longer, I pulled it out and put in a Plextor PX708 and no more coasters.Plextor has a nice feature if you are having problems and you think it is the drive you can test the plextor and it will tell you if it is the drive or something else You pull the ribbon away from the drive and short out the slave and cable select and put in a blank cd (700mb) and start the computer up the drive will inspect itself and after it is over if the drive is ok it will spit out the cd if not than it is the drive that is bad

I`ve been using NEC-1300a for more than 6 months now and it has served me very well indeed. It`s one of the cheapest recorders out there and it has proved very reliable too.

NEC-1300a is an improved version of the one you had. This is just my personal exprience, hopefully it won`t start to play up.
