I just purchased a Sony DVD R and installed it. I have been reading all over and am confused with all the differnt information. DVD Decriptpr, DVD Shrink, CSS .... My drive came with My DVD. Do I need the other software I see in the forums? Is my software any good. I appreciate all of your help!
Check out the guides section. The previous poster before me is correct. The minimum you need is DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink. You could go another route and use AnyDVD (or DVD Decrypter) and CloneDVD to get the job done. It's really a matter of what works best for you - best advice, invest in like a 5 pack of DVD-/+RW's to test with first so you don't spend a lot of cash burning through your R's.
The guide section of this website should get you started nicely in burning DVD's. :)
Even if you don't mind paying for a program, it's best, as others have already noted, to start with Decryptor and Shrink. They're both free, and I consider them somewhat of a baseline to use for comparison. If they do everything you need, stop there. If you aren't happy with the results, post a question about what you don't like about them and I'm sure you'll get lots of advice, either for different settings or different software (or probably both).
Although the dvdshrink guide is useful it only shows how to burn with Nero. jmc318 all you need is dvdshrink and dvddecrypter.
1)open shrink
2)open disc
3)click "backup!"
4)select "ISO Image File" as your target device
5)check the box to launch dvddecrypter
two tabs over "backup options" you can select perform deep analyis. some say this improves the quality of your burns. I've never noticed, but if you've got the time it wouldn't hurt.
