Hi all

okay iv just started this ripping thing and i have downloaded smartripper and DVD2AVI, now i kinda guess you use smart to extract the files to the harddrive then use DVD@AVI to change these files into an avi which is what i want.Just to store them on my hardrives as i dont have a dvd burner yet.


anyway im sure i heard that the smartripper only takes about 20-30 mins but mines taking upwards of 7 hours at current!! is this right?? as my dvd speed is only going at 0.4x even thou its a 16x dvd reader.

Go into your device manager and check if you have DMA enabled. Rip speed varies with different computers, 7 hours is way to long though. Make sure you don't have a bunch of unneeded applications running in the background.

I'm not sure why you want to convert to .AVI if all you want to do is watch them on your computer. I use Shrink to rip with, I just send the files to my hard drive. If I want to watch the movie, I just use my media player browser to locate the VIDEO_TS folder.

okay it was taking so lomg cos the disk was scrated. so iv ripped lilo and stitch instead several times but the picture is to small.no matter what compresions i use it remains the same size.how can i rip it so that its a decent sized picture??

The amount of compression applied should not effect the size of the picture. You should be able to right click on just about any media player and select "full screen".

Are you still using SmartRipper? What media player are you using?

yeah you were right, i played it from the dvd and it was the same as it was on the ripped version so thats sorted now. seems strange how the picture size is different on the monitor compared to playing it in a stand alone dvd player.when i click on full screen it looks crap even when playing it from the dvd itself:)

thanks for the help fasfrank, will convert the vobs to AVI so they dont take up as much HDD space.:)

I thought thats what you had in mind, I never actually convert vobs to AVI so I don't know how much space you save. I'm usually going in the oposite direction, converting AVI to dvd for burning.
