I thought you basically find the main movie vobs , demux the movie from them with say smartripper , re-encode the movie with rempeg (in this case you would have to scale it to lose 1.4gig approx) then remux the new movie back into the vobs with ifoedit then copy across the rest of the files , menu , extras etc.
I've seen a guide somewhere , try at doom9 or here http://mpucoder.kewlhair.com/derrow/index.html
Theres loads of problems with doing this such as the more you want to keep the more your movie quality has to suffer although you can re-encode the extras too but thats even more work . Rempeg quality suffers when you need to trim the film by large amounts but Tmpgenc is much better but its also much harder to use and ifoedit cant remux the film ( YET ) after Tmpgenc so you need to re-author which is even harder and requires even more software.
There will be people out there who can help you much more than me cos I've looked at it and thought no I'll stick to just the movie

What you can do is using any dvd ripping program, I use smartripper, you rip the menu vob files from the dvd. They are usually the smallest set of vobs and you can usually tell them apart from the rest. Once you have that, convert it to a m2v file using whatever converter you have. Tehn you just load it up in dvd maestro, and following the part of the dvd maestro guide at doom9.org which tells about re using original menus, you can remake the buttons and such. hope that helps.
