I have been trying for days to get Winmx to connect to the network on my primary computer. I have a wireless home network and it works fine on an old remote networked computer, but it won't connect on my main computer. I have tried changing the settings to match those on the remote computer, but it still just blinks yellow endlessly. Please help!

Hi... hope I'm not too late with this... just found this forum :-)

Need more info about your setup... what O/S you using?

Are you running a software firewall in the computer?

What's different about the computer that does work?

Usually the problem you have is due to something outside the WinMX program itself, so settings in the program may not help.

Both computers are running XP Home. The only firewall is the one on the router. It is the computer tied directly to the router that has the no connection problem. The computer that Winmx works on is wirelessly networked to the Internet through the computer that doesn't work.

Check all your network settings on both machines. XP has a built-in firewall which may be enabled on one but not on the other. With a firewall in the router, you don't really need the XP one enabled. I have some more questions that I'll address later when I have a bit more time ;-)

I'm having a little trouble visualizing your network setup. Let's see if I have this right:

You have a router connected somehow to the Internet (how?). The router connects to one computer (how?). There is a wireless connection from the first computer to the second computer. WinMX works fine on the second computer, but not on the first.

Am I right so far? If not clarify ;-) We can solve this with a logical troubleshooting procedure... :-)

My router is a Microsoft wireless base station, connected to a Motorola cable modem. All the rest of the message is correct. Winmx works on the second computer that's connected via the wireless network in my home, but the primary computer won't connect to Winmx. Thank you for responding.

OK from what you have said so far I get the picture here:

modem <-> MS Wireless base >|<-cable-> Computer 1
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . L<-wless-> Computer 2

which is a little different from what I understood (or misunderstood ;-) earlier.

So the only obvious difference is how the two computers connect to the MS base: the working one(computer 2) connects via wireless; the non-working one(computer 1) via a network cable to the base. So computer 2 does not actually go *through* computer 1 for its Internet but through the MS base unit.

Then it has to be some difference in the software setup on the non-working machine. BTW, would I be correct in assuming that other Internet functions work OK on computer 1, such as web browsing & email?

Anyhow, on computer 1, check the "Local Area Connection Properties" on both machines & see if they both have the same components installed. Then check the properties on each component.

Now obviously there will be some differences which can't be changed: they will have different types of network interfaces and they have different Ip addresses. Otherwise they should be much the same.

There are only two items that *must* be there for this to work: "Client for Micrsoft Netwoks" and "Internet Protocol(TCP/IP)". Optional (necessary if you want to copy stuff between machines) is "File & Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks". Anyhting else that might be there is unnecessary for the average home user.

When you're done checking & updating that stuff on computer 1, select the "Advanced" tab at the top of "Local Area Connection Properties" and make sure that the checkbox under "Internet Connection Firewall" is *not* checked.

If none of this works, download & install "Belarc Advisor" and email me the output from that (PM me for the address).

if you haven't already done so.

Hi kenmo,
I have been following this thread aas well since I am having a problem that is almost identical. I treid to go to your site at http://homepage.ntlworld.com/j.buchanan/
but someone has placed an ad in place of youe URL and it just follows it to a travel center.
Back to my problem. I checked out the "Internet options " , General" tab and found an extra check there for " Internet Protocol(TCP/IP) and QoS Packet Scheduler. I unchecked the QoS box but still cannot get WinMx to work. It used to work on this PC until I got hit with a virus and had to "upgrade" my anti virus control to Norton 2004. I downloaded a trial version of Panda Titanium, turned Norton "off" but still no better P2P working.
I have tried to figure out where the port settings that are that WinMx needs but was unable to come up with a place to check if those ports were somehow rendered useless by the new AV system. ANy help you can come up with would be appreciated. I have tried other P2P programs but WinMx is what otheres i9n my group are using for other internet business file transfers and I would like to get back into the loop.
Thanks for your considered opinion.

"someone has placed an ad in place of your URL and it just follows it to a travel center"

Here's a clue. When I follow that link, it takes me to the WinMX Help site (not my site BTW). Methinks you may have a spyware/adware issue. Download & install:
Ad-Aware
http://www.download.com/3000-2144-10045910.html?part=69274&subj=dlpage&tag=button

and:

Spybot Search & Destroy
http://www.download.com/3000-2144-10122137.html?part=104443&subj=dlpage&tag=button

Be sure to "check for updates" on both of them before using them. They work like virus scanners but clean out adware and spyware that may interfere with your browsing & other Internet functions. You need both of these as one will catch stuff the other one misses.
Let me know what happens...

Thanks for the come-back, kenmo
I already have ad-aware 6.0 on my PC. I also am running Spyware Guard and Spyware Blaster. Both are freeware programs that seem to work, at least to some degree. I have tried the trial version of another one that is not free and it came up with a couple more spyware cookies that these programs are not picking up, but , all in all, I think I am fairly well insulated against spyware. HAve you looked at these programs? You may have something else worth trying but how miuch is enough? I really hate that form of advertising but I can understand why people do it.
I used to have SpyBot and for some reason I can no longer remember, I opted for Spyware Guard and Spyware Blaster. I will download Spy Bot and try it again later today, just for comparasin sake. In the meantime, still no WinMX!
Have a great day.
I will get back to you again, tho not likely today.
