Is there a way to burn a DVD movie faster. than 1 hour. It also takes 1 hour to read. I was under the impression that it would take approx 15 min for the read and write each !! I have a Dell 8100 P4 1.4 GhZ 256MB Memory (PC800 RDRAM) 20GB HD (Ultra ATA 7200RPM) 32MB DDR ATI Raedon AGP Graphics card.

Also..is there a way to put the DVD movie I just read onto the HD before writing the DVD. Sometimes, the read will take 1 hour, then I put in the blank media, sometime after that I get an error writing...I therefore have to start the whole read process over again...very frustrating !!!

Hi Fern,

You didnt say what programs you are using, but the common programs here are..DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter..create a folder on your hd for dvd work,,then use shrink to rip the files to that folder on you hd,,from there you can use decrypter to burn to a blank dvd..as far as time...it takes me about an hour from start to finish..

Sher,
I use DVDXCOPY Platinum (Advanced mode) from 321. It sounds like your programs take half the amount of time. 1 hour for the read AND the write !! Much better than mine.

What make/model burner are you using? If you're using a burner to rip, it will take a long time because most burners are locked to 2X read speeds as opposed to ROMs which will rip at up to 14X.

The speed of your burner and the speed rating of your discs will also be a factor in your burn times.

Let us know what hardware you're using and we'll be able to better help you.

Thank you so much for your help. I'm using a Philips DVD+RW-D01 reads 32X writes 12X. The blank media is Memorex DVD+RW 4.7GB 120 min 4X.

Fern,

I "bought" xcopy..wasted my money..the programs I mentioned above are "free" and in my opinion are the best. As far as your media, memorex is not a good choice, you should use ritek GO4 or verbatim..

Nephilim,

I use my burner to rip, only because that is all I have at the moment..I average 20-25 min rip time and 20-25 min write time..My brother in law has two internal dvd drives and can't do a dvd that much faster then my setup.

Happy Burning,

Hi fern,

There are several possibilities as to why the process is taking so long for you, one being that your system is on the lower end of the spectrum for backing up DVDs. Most here recommend at least 512MB RAM for good performance and 1GB, like I run, is even better. It's the same story with the rest of the system too, faster components gets you faster times.

I poked around the net for some specs on your drive and didn't find much beyond the fact that most are OEMs for Dell and that many people are having trouble using +R media with them. Here's a link that may be of interest:

http://forums.us.dell.com/supportforums/board/message?board.id=pw_cdrom&message.id=508&view=by_date_ascending&page=1

I'd suggest trying another brand of +RW or -RW (if your drive supports it) such as Verbatim to rule out the media as the problem.

Another factor may be Xcopy itself. I haven't used it in a dog's age but I do know it can be very tempermental and hard to get to work properly.

Another suggestion would be to contact Dell and ask them for an updated firmware for your burner. Newer firmwares typically improve media compatibility and performance.

I do it in less than 60 minutes. Rip time about 8-14 minutes, compression 15-18 minutes burn 17-20 minutes. With no compression about 35 minutes.
