I'm new to irc but it seems very cool. I just wanted to know if I can be charged money for downloading a file, or if there are any fees. Is there anything else I should be aware of such as bandwidth.

No IRC doesnt cost any money.
The only thing really about bandwidth is with your ISP eg if u have a capped Internet plan, just make sure u dont go over that. Apart from that, no charges.

IRC is just a network of servers and channels. mIRC, the program, does cost money for the full version.

Shareware yes, one of the most common, yes .... best? That's up for grabs (and not so in my ever so humble opinion) :P

Trillian for mIRC is horrible! Although I do use Trillian because it can access the AOL messenger network without receiving all that damn spyware =D
P.S. Prae, the Excursion addon was really really shit. Too many bugs, errors, and not too user-friendly.

The newest Opera (v7.5) has a built in IRC client. It's not bad at all, and the browser is the best out there IMO.

Sorry for being off topic, but does the Opera browser have an auto refresh feature?
Because the auto refresh program I use right now for IE is too outdated and you can't seem to download it anymore....

Firstly it's Trillian for IRC not mIRC :P Secondly, if you've used trillian (pro) for some time, it becomes absolutely awesome for chatting and occasional file access -- its not everyday that you can setup a trigger like "If <personX> signs on IRC, send message to <personY> via MSN and message to <personZ> via encrypted ICQ and initiate a DCC transfer on IRC" -- when you are attatched your computer like I am and requre a constant feed of information without having to do everything manually like such Trillian is awesome.

"If <personX> signs on IRC, send message to <personY> via MSN and message to <personZ> via encrypted ICQ and initiate a DCC transfer on IRC"
In my situation, <personX> signs on IRC, I send a message to <personY> on MSN, and that's about it. Oh and then <personY> goes "What in the world is IRC?" =P
I have no use for it lol. All my friends only use MSN.

baaa mIRC is horrible, yea it works for getting onto IRC but ewwwww its horrible itself as a client. Use Klient and no its not a script for mIRC its an entirly differnt client for Windows. Its faster , less crash prone, not to mention there arent nearly as many exploits for Klient as there are for mIRC. in mIRC's defense, there are exploits/hacks/trojanswhat have you that are going attack/effect any IRC client period. mIRC just seems to be the one that gets focused on ;)
