I've noticed over the last couple of days that the speed at which my dvd burner is ripping dvd's has slowed down to 1.4, taking well over an hour to rip a dvd now. I understand there is a registry key that i can alter to fix this problem.

any suggestions on what I can do to fix this problem , other than formatting which I'd rather not have to do if possible. (it's been less than a month since my last format)

I have been attempting with little luck to recode avi's to mpgs to burn them to dvd recently.

any advice for a lost soul?

I haven't heard of a registry key that would do what you suggest.
Check and see if DMA is enabled on your IDE busses.

Start> Control Panel> Performance and Maintenance> System> Hardware tab> Device Manager> Expand IDE/ATAPI controllers> Right click one of the IDE channels and select properties (or select delete and then re-boot, windows will reinstall channel)> Advanced Settings tab. If DMA if able is not enabled change it. Then go back and check the other channel.

Check this first. Also make sure you don't have a bunch of apps running while you are ripping. Make sure you are up to speed on your system maintenance as well, Disc clean, defrag, etc.

I read several threads regarding the Dma, I've checked that already. It is set at DMA.

I've been trying to use Nero visionexpress. (not much luck) most of the time it craps out before it finishes. No other programs running while ripping, i've defragged and all.

Have you run Nero CleanPack tools? This is a driver cleaner that removes known conflicting drivers and a registry checker that will correct faults in the registry that can occur when Nero is moved or changed or other drivers are removed.

What program are you using to rip DVDs with?

Express can process .avi files but it is considered by many to be a poor performer as you are finding out.
My .avi work is all camcorder stuff so I just use converters that work for that. I use Cucusoft's AVI to DVD VCD SCVD MPG converter.

Another one I use is TMPGEnc DVD source creator which works well for what I need to do. Its just a simple converter that converts .avi into .mpg.

Can you tell me how large your .avi files are? How much room do you have on your hard drive?
