Encoding VOB to WM9

I have looked at the forum titles and this seemed the most appropriate so apologies in advance if i have posted this in the wrong forum...

I have several short films which i need to encode into Windows Media 9 avi. Most files encode fine into .avi, but two fine black bands appear on the left and right of the encoded video that do not appear when I play the DVD. I want the video to strech to each side of the screen on the avi and use the full screen breadth, like they do on the DVD.

I have experimented with the various video size format options on XMPEG, which I am using to encode the files. Can anyone help or suggest a different piece of software to encode VOB into WM9 (which is essential btw.)?

Secondly - a feature DVD which i am trying to encode (legally with permission) seems to be split into 3 seperate VOB files. Is there any way to encode all the files directly into one avi?
