I have a model 39001 (v7) PS2 and I'm thinking about modding it. Can someone tell me which modchip is the best for this model? I'm thinking about getting the Magic 3.1 modchip because its features fit all my needs and it is pretty cheap at $29. The Magic 3.1 modchip is Multi Disk - DVD9 Ready, so does it mean this mod chip can play DVD9 backuped disc like Champions Of Norrath, Xenosaga, and Metal Gear Solid 2?
I'm not sure if DMS3 V2.0 ModChip is good. The flash upgrade feature sounds attractive but I heard this chip has some problems. Thanks.

first off let me say that whoever is charging you $29 for a magic 3.1 is ripping you off big time. You should pay no more than $15 for that. Since you have a V7 there are a ton of chips out that you could get. But you must consider some things before you buy on your end. Are you going to install it your self and what you REALLY want the the chip to do. Not just what sounds cool. From what I read it seems to me like you should get either a Duo chip (about $20) or a matrix MXL2 (about $35). They have low wire counts at about 17-18 and should be easy to install for a newb such as yourself. But then we have another question. Do you plan to ever use the sony HDD in the future. If so then I would go with a DMS3 (24 wires, about $50) or the Matrix infinity (18 wires, also about $50). These 2 chips have VERY simular features and work great. I like the Matrix infinity because its easier to install, plain and simple. You make the choice, if your not even more confused now lol.

I want to get a mod chip that can allow me to play as much backuped PS2 DVD and CD games and import PS2 DVD and CD games. Also I want it to be able to play backuped DVD-9 games like Champion's of Norrath and Xenosaga. Also to have the sleep function. The DSM3 is flash upgradable so it should be a good buy to keep up with the new changes in the future. Can you tell me what is the advantage of Duo chip, matrix MXLs and Matrix Infinity over the Magic 3.1 chip? Also I read that the Magic 5 chip is better than Magic 3.1 chip because the Magic 3.1 chips does not pass the double check for many games or something? I'm thinking about buying the Magic 3.1 chip from a website and that site is charging $29 for the first chip. They charge less for bulk order of 10+ Magic 3.1 chips for about $15 each. But since I don't know how to mod my PS2 I'll probably go to a local store and pay for someone to mod it for me. So what is a reasonable price I'm suppose to pay for someone to mod a chip for my v7 PS2 including the price for the chip? And which chip should I get? I might want to get the HDD and the network adapter in the future and want to be able to play online games with backup discs. Thanks.

Since your having some one do it for you I would go with the DMS3 or the Matrix Infinity. Either would be good. They both do all you want them to but each one has something the other doesnt. The DMS3 gives you the ability to use a 3rd party(non-sony) HDD. This way you can use your own HDD you have lying around and save you some money on future games that may utilize the HDD feature. The Matrix Infinity has auto media detection. Meaning it will detect if you are playing a ps1, ps2, or DVD back up or original and boot in the appropriate manner. With all other chips you have to hold down a botton either on the system or the controller to boot ps1, and DVD movie media, original or other wise. If I were you I would find some place that sells the chip and does the install. You save money overall this way. You should not pay more than $120 chip, installation, and return shipping for either of these chips.

How long a go was that? I hope you dudnt pay $120 recently for that. i install a DMS3 for only $100. Even when the chip first came out that was too much.
