If this post is not allowed I did not mean to cause offence.
Since November I have successfully been backing up my region 2 DVDs with DVD X Copy Platinum version 3.1.1.
Recently I have been backing up my region 1 DVDs. I have virtually exhausted the 5 region switches from of both my DVD drives.
Currently my drives are region 2. My DVDs region 1.
I downloaded, installed and activated region free DVD.
The software works in so far as it allows me to watch DVDs of different regions on my PowerDVD (version 4.0). However, I can?t copy the DVDs. I get an ErrorIfo message from DVDXCopy. It is the same message I get if the software is disabled or not there.
I uninstalled DVD region free and tried with DVD ghost. Same error message.
I tried with DVD region master. It seems to work with DVDXcopy Platinum. Unfortunately it only allows me to switch regions on my E and not my F drive. I am, however, operating the trial version of this software.
I downloaded a trail version of I Click Copy DVD and installed DVD43 as my ripper. I managed to circumvent the DVD lock but the burned DVD had choppy playback.
My question is this, is anywhere out there backing up DVDs of different regions and if so what software are you using.
I am running Windows XP Home Edition.
My DVD drives are a HL-DT-ST DVD ROM GRR 8162B (F) and a Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-106D (my E)
If someone could help.

Hi,

My suggestion would be to install a region-free hack on your Pioneer 106 to read discs from all regions without having to spend money on region-free software. RF firmwares can be found here:

http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?category=4&manufactor=25

Then I would ditch Xcopy for worthwhile apps like DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter which will give you region free copies of excellent quality.

Choppy playback is a classic symptom of low-quality media. What have you been using?

Hello. Just a quick note to say thank you for your software suggestions. I am currently backing-up my third DVD, trouble-free with the new applications. I had no clue of the excellent freeware software available superior to DVDXCopy.
My thanks.
In answer to your question I burn with 4X DVD-R. The manufacturers Grade A Media.

Good news! Glad you're off and running.

If you still have problems with choppy playback, the very first thing I'd look at is getting better media. It's a sad fact that even though media is labeled as "Grade A" it doesn't automatically mean it is. "Grade A" usually means it's the best in that manufacturer's line of media and not relative to everyone else's. Ritek G04 and Verbatim Metal AZO are both very good media.

Also it helps to burn sloooooooooooooow .... in some of the worse cases, the "chop" manifests as AV-desynch :)

Im not a Decryptor fan cuz i prefer SmartRipper but its all the same, you run your DVD through Decryptor/SmartRipper and make sure you enable Region free and remove Macrovision... when you've done that, you can rip to AVI/(S)VCD or you can pass it through DVDShrink or soemthing depending on your preference.
