Sorry to impose.
Since November I?ve been backing up my DVDs using DVD X Copy Platinum. On Saturday I saw the light and changed to DVD shrink and DVD Decrypter. It works great.
The thing is I should be able to write at 4X speed. DVD Decrypter, however, never writes above 1.9.
My E drive is a Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-106D.
My media is Grade A Media DVD-R 4X.
The thing is I don?t think it?s a firmware issue and it?s not just cause I?m scared of it.
Initially when I used DVD X Copy my writes speeds were 15 minutes then they dropped to around 29. I figured it was because I had installed more applications and the like.
Recently I performed a system restore. My burning time was back to 15. Then I installed Exact Audio Copy and my write speeds fell.
As I was using Platinum I only had access to burning time and not writing speed. Is it possible Exact Audio is at fault? Any ideas what I should do without removing it.

Should have mentioned in DVD Decrypter Write speed is set at Max. Burn-Proof is off.

I have decided to try and flash my firmware. (If that's the terminology). Can anyone tell me how this is done? I have found what to download I'm just not sure what to do. When to open the download etc. I know all applications should be closed down but how about some processes. Also, if I mess up and the Drive is toast will a system restore fix things. I'm guessing no.In addition, I am not even sure if I am posting this query in the right place. DVD ripping seems to be the reading part of the process and not the burning but there are burning questions posted here. My apologies if I have posted in the wrong place.

Correct. System restore has nothing to do with a drive's firmware.

I'd also double check the DMA settings for your drive as well as your ASPI.

Thank you for your assistance. I followed the instructions reading Readme.exe and running Upgrade.bat and nothing happened. The dos prompt from within Windows came up I confirmed I wanted to go ahead and nothing. I waited a good 30 minutes and re-booted. The drive still works. I have checked using CHKRW.exe at Pioneer and the version running is still 1.00.
I think I found something in device manger. In primary IDE Channel 1 I found under current transfer mode Not Available.
While searching the Afterdawn forums I think someone had posted a similar problem. A poster I believe yourself stated the device might not have been recognised to delete it and re-boot. I can no longer find the link.
This may be related but I don't knowI tried running ADVDInfo and am told Can?t load ASPI32 DLL. Make sure ASPI for Win32 is installed.
I know I appear hopeless at this and at this moment I am. I?ll get the hang of it soon. Any ideas how to proceed?

This is not a link to the post you are looking for. This is something that I posted at another site:

Go into Device Manager, and scroll down to IDE/ATA/ATAPI controllers. Click on the + to the left of it, and it will open up, and you will see the controllers. Right click on Primary Ide Channel first. Then click on Properties. It will bring up another box. Click on Advanced Settings. On Device 0, you should see Ultra DMA Mode 5 for the Current Transfer Mode. This is your hard drive, and unless you have two hard drives, hopefully you will see DMA if available for Device 1. If you see PIO, then one of your DVD's is connected to the Primary/ Slave connection in the motherboard, and it should not be. If it is, then your hard drive will be limited to the speed of your DVD.

OK, at any rate, now, highlight Secondary Ide Channel, and right click on it and go to Properties/Advanced Settings. That is where your DVD drive(s) should be. Both of those should read Ultra DMA Mode 2 for the Current Transfer Mode.(Only if you have 2 connected.) If either of those read PIO, then hit the cancel box, right click on Secondary Ide Channel, again, then click on Uninstall. Click ok, and get out of everything. Shut down the computer, then reboot. Windows will find the DVD burner(s) again and should set them up properly as DMA Mode 2. Check in Device Manager to see if it did, and let us know what you find out.

Hey, initially the current transfers were both IPO. I uninstalled the secondary IDE channels. Windows reinstalled them and now current transfer modes on both devices reads as Ultra DMA mode 2.
What is the difference between these two transfer mode? Also, do you know why my devices would be on IPO mode? Last question, will this mean I will now be able to write at 4X speed?

You are welcome. If your burner is capable of burning at 4x, and the media you use is at least 4x, you should definitely be able to burn at 4x. With the setting of Ultra DMA Mode 2, you will definitely rip faster than if in PIO mode.

My reads speeds are now much faster and my burns are now 4X. Thanks for your help Nephilim and GrandpaBW. Any idea why my current transfer modes were IPO.

Because windows likes to be an onery bitch! If windows detects a number of errors with a given drive it will kick the transfer mode down to PIO, then you have to manually change it back to DMA. Whenever the read/write speeds jump way up look at your DMA seetings :)
