Greetings, newbie here so please bear with me.
Before I get yelled at please understand I have spent countless hours reading and searching but am still confused. The only thing I want to do is to copy some of my treasured DVD's so they play the movie and have the menu available. Don't need the trailers, subtitles and extras.
I have a Lite-On 812S 8x burner, and own DVD Xcopy Platinum. I have burned a DVD using the simple mode that copied the movie only and did not have the menu.
Everything went fine and the DVD was a keeper. I looked at the advanced mode and was totally confused with the options of the title sets. I'm unable to figure out what to check or uncheck to get the movie and menu only. The user manual doesn't help me in understanding what the title sets mean.

I have Nero 6.0 installed, and have downloaded the latest versions of DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter but not installed yet.

Could somebody please advise the easiest way for me to accomplish my goal with the programs I have or what I need to get. Please keep it simple, I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed. Any help is sincerely appreciated.

Hi sheethead, Welcome to AfterDawn. You have the 2 best FREE programs with DVDShrink and Decrypter. However they are somewhat limited in how you can edit your dvd backup copy. Shrink will let you edit out junk like trailers but any time you edit with Shrink you loose the menu operation. So if you do that its best to do just the movie only backup. You need to do a full disc backup if you want the menu to work. I like Shrink but I downloaded the trial version of CloneDVD a while back, then purchased it because with CloneDVD you can edit out extras but it still keeps the menu active and working. Clone does Not decrypt so you need something Like AnyDVD or DVD43 to run in the background as the decrypter while Clone does the rest. CloneDVD is about $40. after the trial and Anydvd is about the same. DVD43 is free. Clone is my 1st choice for DVD backups. This is just my opinion and choices. Both CloneDVD and AnyDVD have trial downloads that are full working versions so you can see if its what you are looking for. Very easy to use. Good luck.

You have all you need. With Shrink let it analyze your disc, click Backup and let it copy files to your HD for burning later with Nero, let it 'auto burn' after backup using Nero or let it auto burn using DVD Decrypter.

You need to set your Preferences in Shrink - either check 'use Nero to burn' when backing up files -or- if you select to backup to an ISO you can set Decrypter to burn right after the backup.

Note: This will copy the entire DVD.

Re-authoring using Shrink does away with menus and allows you to keep what you want.

Recreating menus with another program is a pain. So enjoy what you can get with Shrink, Decrypter and Nero or learn how to use the 321Studios stuff.

Hey sheethead, use shrink to keep what you want, then go to Nero 6 and open nerovision express and you can create a working custom menu there with what you got from shrink. good luck.... PS- nve 2 is relatively easy to use, while 321 should go in the corner (i got it too, waste of $)

Hi sheethead,

Rip the DVD with Decrypter in File mode. This will create a folder on your hard disk with .IFO, .BUP and .VOB files inside.

Then run Nero Recode 2 (not NeroVision Express), select "Copy entire DVD" and open the folder created by Decrypter. Recode will briefly analyze the content and then show the list of titles. Just disable everything but the main movie. That way the menu will remain functional.

Cheers,

Daba

Me again sheethead, since you have Nero, if you get anydvd or DVD43, you don't need clone dvd cos you can go straight into Nero there and use recode 2, nve 2, express, etc.,whatever suits your fancy. Keeps ya from spending any more $.

Sheethead,

Looks like good advice you're being given, but it all can get a bit too complicated if you let it.

I use Shrink for any original DVD, you can choose to select movie only or back up everything including movie, trailers and extras, you just choose the quality that you want so that it fits the disc, you can even make moving menus in to stills if you need to, so that it does fit, I've even dropped quality down to 50% on the main movie and still get a great picture provided there's not too much fast moving action.

I'm not even using the latest version of Shrink as it works for me, I then copy back using CopytoDVD, it's available on the download section of Afterdawn at http://www.afterdawn.com/software/cdr_software/cdr_applications/copytodvd.cfm

One of the best tutorials that I have found is at www.mrbass.org he also has DVD Decrypter tutorial that I use to copy single layer already backed-up movies.

Hope this helps a bit:)

Hi everyone. Lots of good answers here, but the point of the original post was KEEP IT SIMPLE and MOVIE WITH MENU WORKING.

sheethead, you now have many options to try. Most programs can be downloaded from here and guides also. Good luck and come back once you decide what you want to use.

Simple method is this: use shrink highlight main movie only..rip that your HD..then write it back o blank disc w/decrypter...I get main movie and menus only using that procedure..

Good Luck,

It cant be done mate. Shrink either does a "full disk" (where the original menu's remain functional) or you can select items, via reauthor, then the menu function is totally lost..if you can prove otherwise I will buy you a dougnut...choose yer flavour

first a question , what do you need the menu for iff you just want the movie ?
because iff you have the menu and you want to look at the extras , subtitles etc........ you wont find them as you have only copied the movie !
so my advice is stick with just the movie using DVD Shrink in re-author mode and dont worry about the menu .
by shrinking just the movie instead of the full disc the quality of your backup is usually xllent .
happy burning mate :o)

I like "movie only" with a menu purely for the "scene selection" facility. It's dead handy.

Nearly all of my backups have menus just to keep scene selections. I also try to keep DTS tracks for when I take them to a friend's house, so I like having audio selection before the movie. If the menus are too big I either get rid of ones I don't want using DVD Stripper, or compress menus I don't care about to still pictures using DVD Shrink. For removing unwanted titles I use VobBlanker to blank them.

Hello everybody, my sincerest thanks to all that replied and offered their suggestions and links.
I will be reading more guides and playing with the programs suggested. I Thought Pudgy had the solution I was looking for, however brian100 states it will only provide the full disk, or movie only.

Perhaps out of ignorance, I didn't use the proper terminology when describing what I want to do. When I said I only want the movie and menu, what I mean by menu is the ability to look up and go to a chapter (scene selection).
Without the scene selection the disc is basically a VHS format where you have to use fast forward and rewind to get to a specific area.
If the scene selection is inseparable from the rest of the menu then it looks like my options are limited.
I will experiment over the long weekend after doing some more reading about all the programs suggested.
I will let you guys know what worked best for me. Thank you for your warm welcome and support you've provided.

Sheethead, Listen to me! Your Nero 6 package will do all you are asking as long as you use anydvd, dvd region free, or dvd43(i prefer anydvd, DVD43 has a snag sometimes)in the background. Trust me, I do it all the time. In recode 2 you can disable what u don't want leaving the menu (it seperates them) or you can go into nerovision 2 and MAKE your own fully functional menu CUSTOM-MADE with what YOU want on your dvd. If you just want chapters, then, praise Allah, so be it!( no i'm not from the middle east) Believe it or not creating menus can be fun, despite some who think it's a pain

bigorange,
I'll give Nero6 a try.
Please clarify what you mean by running in the background with ANYDVD, do you mean just open the program, make sure it's set to region free, then minimize it, then open Nero?

Sheathead: Just a question? Why would you want to save the menu if you already plan to get rid of the subtitles, other languages and subtitles. It seems to me all you really care about is a menu that says 'PLAY MOVIE'. Please, explain.

Hey guy, Anydvd once installed runs without you ever knowing it's there. No buttons to punch or levers to pull. Altho DVD43 is free, sometimes it hits a snag. I have yet to see a dvd that anydvd didn't de-encrypt. Make sure you install it in your start-up menu, then forgit-a-bout-it. Happy blazing....

biorange,

Should have read about anydvd before posting.
Automatically runs in the background with DVD inserted.
I won't put it in my startup though, I'll just create a shortcut and when I plan on burning I'll just open it. The more crap you have on startup the more apt to have problems. I like to run lean and when I do burn I will close out all unnecessary programs with task manager as to minimize any problems.

Siber,
I tried to clarify myself in a additional post, what I want is only to play the movie and be able to enable the chapter selection feature. All the other stuff I don't need.

Sheethead: you do know that you always have the chapter feature, regardless of the software program you use. Even with copies made with Shrink and Decrypter you should have no difficulty clicking to the chapter you are interested in. If you save the original menu but all features except for PLAY and CHAPTERS, I don't really see what you gain by that. To each his own, of course. I think you are getting some great advice from everybody about this.

BTW, sheethead. I run AnyDVD in the background continuouly. I'm not aware of it causing any problems or delays. I did disable the function whereby it checks for update everytime you boot up. I highly recommend the program. It's got one great feature: it does what it is supposed to do while you never know it's there.

Sheethead, i put it in start-up, I never know it even came on, no delays. Each to his own.... If there was only 1 way to do it we wouldn't need this forum( except for the titillating conversation, of course) PS- siber, you do have chapters(but you have to go in order of chapter via remote), but not on a screen where you can jump to the chapter directly

You said "Sheethead: you do know that you always have the chapter feature, regardless of the software program you use."
The one DVD I did burn using DVD Xcopy Platinum, I selected the only movie feature. When I played the DVD in my player I pressed the remote button that displays the menu and nothing appeared on the Tv's screen, so I would assume the chapter fetaure is not present, how else could one access it without using the menu button on the remote.
Perhaps the DVD didn't record properly as I had thought if you say the chapter feature should be there.

I'm not sure what you mean by this, can you kindly clarify.
