also they haven't claimed if the cell phone was rigged to explode or not suggesting foul play.

"Police say the phone was a basic level Nokia 1209, which was released in the nation in 2008.

Reports claim the incident is the first time in Indian history that a mobile phone has exploded while not being charged."

"Basic Level Nokia 1209" - Does this mean it was unmodified? Stock battery? Surely a small brick of C4 would be considered an upgrade...

I know it is not the first time a mobile phone has exploded off the charger, unless you ignore smartphones...because there were plenty of exploding 3GS's sold there.

Gotta make sure I get a strong as hell case for my next phone. The military doesn't need grenades anymore, just throw a Nokia 1209 and some iPhones.

The only problem is that cases tend to make phones run hotter; making an explosion more likely. Maybe if you could find a kevlar case...

I don't buy it...Is there really anything that could explode with such force in a cell? Even if it was a cheap battery?

Actually it's been done for real. years ago a Palestinian leader was assassinated with such a setup. You don't need a lot of explosive to get just one man.

I bet it will be impossible to sue the battery manufacturer. You can build shell industries in that country. No sue Nokia they have the money, they are easy to sue and they should have known better.

What is not known is how old the instrument was. With the available packages for mobile phone more and more people are moving away from the landlines. My phone actually costs me just $2.20 per year for free incoming within my circle and get about 80 minutes of talk time.

The price difference between an original Nokia battery and Chinese chipo is quite large around US$ 6/=. But who in his right mind would replace a dead battery costing US$ 7/= when a brand new instrument with 1 year warranty itself is available for around US$ 25/= in open market that can be used with absolutely any GSM service provider?

BTW the original Nokia supplied batteries are also made in China!
