Okay, I've used three different types of media (fujifilm +r, memorex -r, and another type of +r) and all have the same result, the game starts up slowly and freezes every two or three seconds. I used dvd decrypter at 1x and 2x and an NEC burner. Loaded with swapdisc fix on a v.4 ps2 with flip top. What do you guys think. thanks.

how about it, can it be media or laser. If laser, do I adjust the white gear or screws? Not sure which would make the game stutter like it does.

I should say that I just made a successfull back-up of grandia 2 on the fugifilm +r and it booted right up with smd. is there something special with the fix to get it to load, I am doing what it tells me to; smcd, swap to cdloader, eject to load smd, swap to dvdr. the dang games just keep stuttering.
p.s. noticed that even when 1x is chosen as write speed, DVD Decrypter writes at 2.5x. I'm baffled.

not that anybody is reading this but, in the cdloader submenu are there supposed to be fixes that you highlight and select because all i got are empty menu files.

maybe a few answers
1.the minimum write speed for dvd+r discs is 2.4x so if you select a lower speed than that it will still write at that speed
2.only the cdloader for the v7+ ps2 has the sub menu options the cdloader for the v1-6 ps2 does not have them as they are not needed
3.some v4 ps2's have problems reading dvd+r discs would recomend you try backing up your game to a quality dvd-r disc(eg somthing like ritek g04 dvd-r discs)
4.also some people who have had problems like yours have had better luck getting there games to run with dvd loader which is avalible from ps2 ownz(you will have to sign up there to download it)

Unfortinuately, I used a decent -r (memorex) and can't get the game to play even close to decent, I did even download and try dvdloader. This is the only game I have trouble with. I guess I'll have to keep the original in a safe place:) Thanks anyway.

I believe you need a cd loader for hitman contracts. Check swapmagicfix.com

I guess the best thing to do now is clean your laser with some rubbing alchohol.

try burning using Alcohol 120, load with sm3dvd (ps2ownz, olsfan),and the white cog adjusts the laser angle, try turning it one notch at a time.
also seems from what you said that you didn't use a TOC disk with cdloader.
sm3dvd loading: smdvd, swap for sm3dvd, swap for backup and press square.
