Okay, I searched for this and found some hits, but none
that seems to really address my problem.
To start with, I have a NEC ND-2500A.
I've used Shrink to make copies of some of my movies, many which are fairly recent; no problem, but I was using Memorex DVD R/W's. I wanted to make some copies
to keep for a while, so I purchased 10 Maxell +R DVD's.
I thought I had read someplace on the forum that this was an okay brand.
The whole problem is this: I tried making a copy of a movie that tries to place a silly little program on your PC called "IPlayer"; fortunately, I had turned off
my autostart, but, when I made a copy of this movie with Shrink, and burned to the Maxell DVD +R's, when I try to play the movie, after it appears to be loading, I get the message "No Disc". I tried using DVDCryter and making an iso image, still no luck with the Maxell DVD's. I tried DVDXCopy, same result. Maybe this problem is really simple, and these DVD's are just really flakey, as the Memorex R/W's play just fine.
As I stated, I did search for an answer to this, but couldn't find a problem just like it. There is no problem with any of the software as far as making the DVD, it's just the finished product not playing.
Someone please suggest a good brand/deal on DVD's; I guess it has to be these Maxell DVD+R's ?? These things only say DVD+R, 4.7GB, 4X, 2hrs, write once, single sided.
Thanks for any information.

Thanks ! Did you ever hit the nail on the head !!!
Info regarding the Maxell DVD's below. These things say on them Data-Video; I think I'll go with those DVD's that get mentioned quite a bit, can't think of the name right now, but anything has to be better than these things.
I did upgrade the firmware to 1.07, which was the latest I could find. Is there any source that's states
approximately how long a R/W DVD will securely keep it's data ?
Thanks again for the help and info.

The ID on your Maxells is RICOHJPNR01 which is quality media. I'm guessing the media you say gets mentioned a lot is Ritek and, as a point of interest, the Ritek +R that I use are RICOHJPNR01 as well and burn very nicely.
The data retention for RW's, and all discs for that matter, depends on the quality of the disc, the quality of the write and what conditions the disc is stored in afterward.
Quote: The whole problem is this: I tried making a copy of a movie that tries to place a silly little program on your PC called "IPlayer"
The only time I've had a problem with Shrink was with discs that had those stupid little player apps on them. I got around it by ripping the disc with DVD Decrypter and then processing the film with Shrink. It seems you've gotten past the rip but I'm still suspect of those player apps. A couple questions:
Does the problem only occur with the one film with the player app on it?
Does the movie in question work if you burn it to one of your Memorex RW's that have worked in the past?
Are you still having problems with the Maxell's after the firmware upgrade? If you are, I would tend to lay the blame on it being a problem title and not a media issue especially since RICOHJPNR01 is quality and you've tried several different methods and apps.

I can't help much with anything here but wanted to say that I get the no disc errors probably one out of every ten uses with dvdshrink. It's frustrating.

Okay, I'm still working on it, because I don't like mysteries; they were meant to be solved.
Yes, the movie records perfectly on the Memorex R/W's.
No, the movie does not record on the Maxells yet, and
I've already wasted 7 of them.
I did exactly as you stated, and used Decrpyter, then used Shrink. I've tried several things. I still have no answers, but I guess I should try recording another movie to these Maxells. The upgrade to the firmware really had no noticeabe effects, but it didn't hurt.
I'll see how these Maxells do with another movie, and if they work, probably pull out my hair.
I'm glad [well, not really glad you lost a DVD] to hear
that others have this problem on occassion; at least I'm probably doing something right. It's just strange though, as I used these Memorex R/W's for several movies before this one and things worked perfectly. Then I get this silly 'Tinkerbell' title and have problems when I use the Maxells. BTW, DVDXCopy had no success with it either.
Will let you know how it goes with other movies. Meanwhile, I have no ideal what might be wrong, but I'm slowly learning more and more, and will find out what's going on.
And yes, those were the brand of DVD's I was talking about.
Thanks. I appreciate the response and info.

Ok. Last night i experimented...these discs are 4x. generic =r's. I burnt them at 2.4x speed instead of my usual 4x and so far everyone has burnt successfully. Have you tried lowering the speeds?
True I am losing a bit of speed with that but I would rather do this than not have one that burns at all.
You guys are great and so is this forum. thanks for all your help. I will keep checking back for more posts.

Okay, I'm outa' answers right now until I regroup on
this problem.
I tried burning another of my movies to the Maxells' and I get the same "No disc". Still works fine with the Memorex R/W's. And yes, I did notice that the Maxells were getting burned at 6x, so I lowered the speed to 2.4; same result, with a different movie than
the one with the 'app' on it. I've tried using Decrypt
to get it on the drive and Shrink to write the DVD. Same result.
Is it possible to get a batch of bad DVD's ??!!! I'm opening up the 3rd pack of the Maxells; that's 10 that
are shot ! Something is very evidently not right here.
I may buy a 1 or 2 different brands of DVD's locally, but I would bet the result's gonna' be the same.
I think there's something going on here that I'm missing. Surely there's no way 10 blank DVD's could be bad. But why do the Memorex's work perfectly ??
If anyone has ANY suggestions, ANY, I'm open to them.
If anyone can interpret this log [from Nero], this is the last failure attempting to write at 2.4x; by the way, I don't know that it matters, but I do have SCSI drives, as can be seen. Anyway, I'm going to copy the whole log to another location and totally wipe this one, then write a DVD with a Memorex DVD, then one with
one of the Maxells. Here's the log, sorry it's kinda' long....
