Virtualdubmode hangs up at around 20 percent of encoding

I hope I post this in the right room but here it goes.

The problem is realy getting enoying.
I rip my dvd's with smartripper (no aspi-reading) and it seems to work.
I get the vob file created by smartripper loaded into vurtualdubmode but when I try to encode it into Divx it will only encode around 20percent of the movie after that the whole system hangs up.
It used to work once and I don't know what changed.
I downloaded virtualdubmode and divx-codex several times and tried again but nothing works.
Meanwhile my harddrive is getting fuller and fuller and I'm getting more and more frustrated.
Help me plz before I go terminater-style on my computer
