I live in a town of about 300,000 people. Not to large, not to small. I work for a company that sells computers and home entertainment, and on a normal week I might speak with a little over 300 customers.
In this small amount of time, and in the last few months, I have spoke with many people, (one of my very close friends works with the FBI as a senior network engineer) and have heard some interesting stories...
Bittorrent files are no longer as safe (yes, even using peerguardian) as they used to be. The protocols they use, and ports that are common (6881-6889) are being sniffed by more 'anti-sharing' companies and organizations that one can shake a stick at.
I have spoken with many people, and recently some have been getting letters in the mail from their ISP, let me give you the letters they are getting. Keep in mind, these letters are being delivered VIA mail, NOT e-mail...

Upon Comcast's receipt of a counter notification that satisfies the requirements of the DMCA, Comcast will provide a copy of the counter notification to the party who sent the original notification of claimed infringement. We will then follow the DMCA's procedures with respect to a received counter notification.

Now I called bullshit, until me myself got one in the mail... Then it was time to do a bit of research as to what the letter meant.
I called my ISP ask made up some stupid reason for the call, like my e-mail wasn't working. When I finally got someone on the phone that seemed to be like a pretty cool guy (yes, multiple phone calls) I asked him as to the true meaning of the letter. He told me its more or less a scare letter, indeed from a 3rd party company or organization contacting my ISP, but it is only to warn you, and they will be watching your incoming and outgoing transfers more closely for the next month or so.
Well, this was a relief and a torment in its own... Relief because Im not going to prison, and torment because I needed a new client to download my 'legal backups' from. After speaking with my friend at the FBI, he said the only P2P that is VERY (I don't say impossible because anything is possible on the net it seems) difficult to track and trace is the IRC network... Time to do some research.
My first impressions with IRC were back in 95-96, using a IRC client called Homer with the school's Macintosh?s... Buggy DCC commands, and better for just chatting...
Anyways, I downloaded mIRC and decided to give it a shot. To my surprise mIRC is amazingly simple with basic understanding, and the best part?
NO UPLOADING
IRC is a leachfest, which also means it will keep you fairly safe when downloading. I still use Peerguardian when downloading, but blocked addresses are much less, the download speeds are great, and I don't have to upload anything.
Ill try to run through the basics of installing and configuring mIRC, and after this tutorial you should all be able to connect fairly easily to the network and be downloading in no time.
------------------------------------------------------
Downloading mIRC
mIRC can be acquired for a free trial from www.mirc.com and you can download here http://www.mirc.com/get.html
Once you get mIRC install it. When it asks for nick names, e-mails, and what not, I would just put bogus info in those locations, but that?s up to you.
After its set up and you have a screen like this
Don't worry about server info, or any of that yet. Close the program, because we are going to install a mod for mIRC that makes it a bit more user friendly for users that plan on downloading things from DCC bots.
I use Invision 2.0, which can be found at http://www.robpol86.com/misc_pgs/invision.php
Install that, and your mIRC should look something like this the next time you open the program after installing Invision.
From there, it is time to check your download settings. This will make your life easier. Some people will argue that putting 'auto accept incoming transfers' on is a problem, but unless you plan on waiting in a line for hours looking at your moniter till you get an incoming file, I recommend putting it on. Much easier on you in the future. To do this, while in mIRC go to 'Tools' ------- 'Options'
you will get this window again
but his time we will want to go down to the DCC options tab, which should be set up like this
Then, go to the 'ignore' tab and change your method to 'disabled' like this
the other settings are fine, so just keep mIRC open, and here is where we start to surf for files.
Lets start by showing you how to find files over the mIRC network.
Head over to http://www.ircspy.com/ and you will see a search box on the top left. Make sure the search tab is searching for XDCC, and type a file in to search for. In this case, I will search for a copy of Thief Deadly Shadows, because I bought the game and do not have a CD-ROM drive. So I am going to download the images and mount them, so I can play the game I purchased. :|When the next pages loads up, you have a couple choices about how you want the information displayed.
I usually sort by 'transfer' or by 'slots'. Transfer will show you the servers with the most bandwidth offering people, and slots will offer you usually the server that has the shortest wait time.
In this case I will sort by Transfer, because I would rather wait in a longer line, but download faster when Im up in que. Here is what I get when I searched for Thief, and sorted by Transfer.
We are going to want to download from one of the faster servers, so lets choose the top one.
This is where mIRC and ircspy.com become very cool. Not only does ircspy.com connect you to the correct mIRC server, it also copies all the information you need to type, to make the DCC start once you get in the chan. Watch this video to show you how to do this.
(you might want to 'right-click, save target as' so you can play from your desktop or something)
http://www.puttingthedamageon.com/camdog/mirc/connect.avi
Notice by clicking on #5, from ircspy, it connected us to the correct server, and also copied the link we needed to paste into mIRC. Very handy. We were added to the download cue, at position 5. Once this spot opens, since we set up mIRC to automatically accept files, it will start on its own.
About 5 minutes after I made that video, my DCC started up. Here is what it should look like. (speeds will vary depending on which bot you are downloading from, and what its upload cap is set to)
Once downloads are finished, they will be placed in your C:\Program Files\mIRC\download directory.
A couple tips.
1) If you do not finish a download, try to resume from the same server/chan/bot you started or sometimes your file will get corrupt if its not the same size/compression etc.
2) sometimes you will download a file and extract it, only to find that you are missing one of the rar files inside the directory and can't extract the image files... In this case, what I do is head over to
and join channel #incomplete by typeing in the bar below,
/join #incomplete
once you are in the channel, this is what you would type to get a rar file that your mission, for instance, that version of theif I downloaded did not have rar file #40 in CD # 3.
so, in the file we downloaded, the original name was
I hope this helped, any questions just post, and Ill try to answer asap.

It is a nice guide. There are also more guides on www.slyck.com. Let me add though, PeerGuardian doesn't do anything. Same with Protowall. All it does is give you a sense of false security.

BT, P2P and IRC all arent 100% protected from being spied on by the RIAA/MPAA and even your ISP. your ISP sees all the traffic going across their network and they do tend to notice now and then when a user with 'basic lowlevel' broadband connection is downloading monsterous amounts in small amounts of time, ie 100 GBs in 1 month when your EULA states you have a bandwidth limit or download limit. anywho back to the point, your ISP is going see what your are upto anyway regardless of whatever P2P yer using or IRC.
btw, IRC is far far far from 100% 'safe'. in case you didnt notice, there's been about 5 DCC exploits found for mIRC 6.x alone within the last year or so , not to mention all the lovely other exploits and trojans that tend to wander the IRC landscape.

Obsession with exploits and trojans? all I did was state a plain fact about mIRC as well IRC itself: that it has its share of both exploits and trojans.
aint in the mood to get into an arguement over this. Im done. ppl wanna use mIRC go right ahead and I'll use Klient

this is utter well, nonsense to be honest...
yes its true standard ports can be sniffed.
but if your clever at ALL. you'll learn how to change your port ranges.here's a more or less optimal range
( within the region 49152 through 65535 is preferable)
as these ports arent being used and if everybody in the community uses a different port, everybodys safe, if everybody used 8 ports then ofcourse isp's can throttle or block that range.

Dude, how stupid - can you be?, the torrent issues wont be fixed because they are torrent issues not the program issues - and 2 on IRC your computer doesent connect to another computer - it connects to a server.. high speed server that can not trace u.. i mean jeez how naive are you?
do a little Research before u answer posts man

hey Loner Id hate to burst your bubble pipedream there but YES an IRC server can trace you and your location. each IRC logs connections made to the servers; so when you connect to any IRC server it logs that connection. how do you think hackers get tracked down? that idiot kid that hacked Yahoo was partially traced down using logs of IRC.
you can use a Proxy to hide your IP but even a proxy can be traced back to your original IP since the proxy server also keeps logs of IPs connecting to it. Or you can use a BNC (bouncer)

Quote: that idiot kid that hacked Yahoo was partially traced down using logs of IRC
Pastially traced yes, But having a Dynamic IP - Aswell As using a proxy gives a a hell of a more likely chance not to get traced then using BitTorrent - also they are on ultra high ports that no-one checks anyway - and people dont download from you, so your not uploading, unlike in bittorrent - people mainly go after people uploading surely you know that?
Quote: BT, P2P and IRC all arent 100% protected from being spied on by the RIAA/MPAA and even your ISP
taken from your post dude
ok, IRC is not 100% neither is anything else but it is the safest way to leech
sorry to burst your bubble...

chill guys :) no point in ripping at eachother.
Anyway...The way I see it is, there are lots n lots of people on the internet and if I was to make a totally wild and uneducated guess, I'd say about 60% of net users are downloading or doing something illegal on the net, the other 40% are probably newbies to the net and will eventually learn how to download illegally. ok..there are probably the minority of people with halos on their heads who never "steal" copyrighted stuff, (apart from recording films from the tv or copying cassette tapes cos their mates or parents have asked for it or something (I wonder if people from the riaa ever do that..and as far as I know, its just as illegal as downloading from p2p's right?)
My point is.....as I said..there are lots of people on the internet in the same way that there are lots of cars on the roads...neither are really safe and you could just as easily get knocked over by a car, as u could just as easily get caught downloading illegally, if I was gonna worry about getting run over by a car, I would just stay in the house all the time..the same with downloading..if I was gonna worry about getting caught, then I wouldn't bother downloading from p2p's illegally (not that I do ofcourse :P) but if people are going to worry about it..then the only thing to do is to stop doing what your doing but I doubt thats going to happen...so it doesn't really matter whats safe or not..its not going to stop anyone until they themselves get that threatening letter through their doors

I suppose i can see your point - the only problem is, thats not technically what this post is about, we are not here to talk ethics about downloading neither are we here to Discuss Pirating neither the pro's or the cons
the point of this thread is that mIRC, is so much better and safer then most P2P - the only safer thing is not to do it at all...
not that anybody here does that of course ;D

with respect dean..I believe this thread is exactly what its all about..the whole concept of p2p is to share files with people..whether or not its used legally or illegally is dependant on the user.
About the ethics of downloading. I personally think that downloading software and music illegally is unethical and totally wrong. Its not something I would ever do or would ever condone, and I know you feel the same way about it.
..but thats not what I'm talking about and as far as I could see I was on topic of this thread (apology's if I'm wrong)..it just took a while to get to the point thats all. My point being that it doesn't matter what method a person chooses to use to aquire music, films, or software, theres always that chance of getting caught, just as theres always that chances of getting hit by a car..people are aware of the risks so they should be careful what they do and accept the consequences of their actions and like you say, the safest way is to not do it at all :-)

C10N3..
you say you have 2 kids? Then your obviously an adult..why don't you act like an adult and show some respect instead of throwing out personal abuse at people you know nothing about...I do agree that Dean's initial reply to you might have been slightly out of order and maybe your anger at him might have been justified, but theres no justification for the personal attacks on him and had I been a moderator you would've been out of here as soon as I saw it. Dean might have a slightly impatient and seemingly aggressive attitude toward people at times, but thats him, he doesn't mean anything by it..but I can tell you from personal experiance..he is one of the most helpful people I've ever met and would go out of his way to help someone, including yourself. So lay off abit please.
Oh..btw...your constant references to homosexuality? whats wrong with it? I can expect that sort of attitude by a teenager, but not a grown man with kids of his own..what if your kids turn out to be homosexual or lesbian? <<anyway..thats totally off topic so if u wanna reply to that your welcome to email me

wtf, cant you spell? dude.. especially at your age - and u cant spell right?
thats a shame
and, fuck my brother? thats very mature for a guy of your age - i hope u dont teach your kids that, and i dont have a brother actually, but thats besides the point dickwad, dont F**kin mention my family at all, u got a problem with me? fine leave my Godamn family outa it - how f**kin immature are you eh?
and by the way i used to use Bittorrent - got about 60kbps out of it (on a 512 ADSL line) which is the max isent it?
the reason i stopped using it is because it sucked - and the RIAA, MPAA mainly (yes i say mainly) catch people when they upload, not download - so it seems like the logical way to go...
Ps, u hardly ever check your spelling? - thats a bad thing to do man

BOTH OF U GUYS ARE PANSIES!!!
First off C10N3, your english or whatever u call that is absolutely pisspoor. If u type or speak like that u are a very uneducated adult. Second off Lonero, come with something better than learn how to spell. U started the argument by calling him stupid and ive seen u do that before. I think your the one that lives in the basement because ur a BITTER dude(there has to be a reason). Suggestion, dont call someone a idiot right off the bat for making a comment. Hes right, u are acting like a cunt and he wasnt even talking to u. Go ahead and hurl ur insults at me, but your futile attempts will only further my point.
My personal outlook on this issue is who the fuck cares which is faster! U guys are getting way to EMOTIONAL about the issue at hand. Pull ur tampons out and quit being so damn sensitive.
And response to if ur kid was a homosexual, I would develop a time machine and go back and abort his faggot ass.

Where The Fuck Did You Come From?
You were not invited to this conversation - dont you have the neurons to understand the fact that we are not getting "emotional" over anything you little half wit, we are merely having a debate about the speeds and exploits of certain Downloading Applications, if your tiny brain cant understand that i apoligise, maybe we can explain it to you at a later date..
Pansies? what are you a 12 year old girl?
and if you have seen my previous posts maybe you will realize i probably know more than you on this subject... just out of curiosity - which do you prefer? ;D

frozilla...I'm not going to respond to the homosexuality bit..all I can say is...if thats how you feel about it I pity you. If you dont already have kids, I hope you never do, if you do have kids, I really pity them having a father with that attitude..very immature.
Loner and C10N3 had their little moment both of which were totally uncalled for and I'm sure both saw the errors of their ways and will learn by their mistakes...your reply to both was just as rude and uncalled for as their replies to eachother. I dont know what your intentions were in your message..maybe you saw that the flaming had stopped so wanted to add more fuel to it and kick it off again? very immature.
<QUOTE>First off C10N3, your english or whatever u call that is absolutely pisspoor<QUOTE>
You just did the same thing as you complained to loner about......judging someone by their poor spelling is very unfair and very arrogant. Many people can't spell, some people suffer with a condition called dyslexia. Some people might not even be English and english being their secondry language, some might be young children who havent fully dveloped their spelling skills, whatever the case..no one knows what the reason is for poor spelling just by seeing it on a message board and person certainly shouldn't be judged by their poor spelling so lay off the lame spelling attacks.
This thread was started by camdog but I'm sure he didn't intend for it to turn into a flame fest so I personally think its time for mod intervention and close this thread.
