Hi everyone. I have recently been having some LAN issues with my bit torrent client: ABC. I am using a shared LAN internet connection and have been experiencing painfully slow transfer speeds. As said before, a firewall is causing the problem if the status if yellow.

To get around this, you must free up some ports to handle the torrent transfers.

* For windows XP users (sorry this is all I know right now), go to your internet connections window (my network places-> view internet connections). Click on the internet gateway connection shown. This is where you are getting your access to the internet from.

*Next, click on the 'change settings of this connection.' You will get a tabbed window. Click the 'settings' tab in the lower right hand corner. This will give you a list of services and their corresponding port values. These represent all the ports that are accessible by internet users...such as bit torrent peers. Click the 'add' button in the lower left.

*Describe the purpose of this port under 'description of service.' This can be anything that simply helps you remember why it is there later.

*For the IP address, type: 127.0.0.1. This is the computer's way of simply saying "This current computer that I am on right now."

* Next, for the internal and external port numbers...you must type the same port for each. You will 'add' another service for each desired port to be opened. You want to open ports 6969 and any from 6881-6999. Don't worry, you do NOT have to open ALL these ports. In most cases, three will be very sufficient.

Bit Torrent client transfers use up one port for each simultaneous download that occurs. Therefore, only open as many ports as you want simultaneous torrent downloads. When you are done, click 'ok.'

Under your 'max' and 'min' port values under your particular BT client's preferences, just add that proper port range (6881-6889) if you opened those nine ports before. Hopefully this should help some of you. I did this and now I am averaging circa 100kbs with my shared cable connection and that nasty yellow is gone.

Oh, BTW, this should be down on the computer which is directly connected to the net. This should help any home LAN users. As for you cooperate folks...you just don't have the proper privileges to open such ports. Maybe its time to start sucking up to your local system administrator ;-D. Again, I hope this helps.

- Narc

p.s -> if your using a router you must forward the opened ports to it as well. You can find the proper procedures for this on the CD that came with your router.

hey buddy, you're a smart lad, not bad for a newbie hehe however im having a conflict issues regarding router stuff.

i tried following the steps you rpovided (ie. the one with "*" stars). when i reached step 2, i click the settings button in the internet connection properties and a dialogue box appeared saying that:

"The port number is already in use by another entry. Please anter a unique port number."

so i click ok and this service settings pops up:

Description of service:
MSNMSGR

Name or IP address (for example 192.168.0.12) of the computer hosting this service on your network:
192.168.62.51

External port number for this service:
3 *TCP UDP

Internal port number for this device:
9049

and if i click "ok" this message pops up:

"The port number is already in use by another entry. Please anter a unique port number."

btw, bold means those are my current entry. please help me coz azureus healt is always on yellow... thanx in advance.
