Microsoft Corp. beat predictions to report a company record for the first quarter.
The Redmond-based software giant experienced much higher performance particularly of its Windows and Office software products. It announced a 51 percent rise in first quarter profit, with net profit for the three months to September at $5.4 billion.

When you have the market dominated with quantity over quality (Windows, Office, Xbox 360) and vendor lock-in after decades of people using proprietary formats, it must be pretty easy to make a profit.
Also, when your deal with OEMs who preinstall Windows is to only allow other operating systems like Linux on lesser-performance systems (or not allow at all), again it must be easy.
Windows 7 does not hurt either...XP systems are failing from old age and Vista systems need the upgrade regardless.
Plus, they just got a boost no one expected...and it hasn't even hit their bottom line yet. Now that the PS3 is hacked, the number of developers making PS3 exclusives will drop significantly.
