VIDEO CAPTURE CARD QUESTION

Hi
I have pinnacle studio 8 on my pc. it comes with some sort of cable to connect my vcr to my computer via usb on one end and svideo/rca on the other. for some reason, my computer does not recognize my vcr when i connect it directly via s-video. if i use the pinnacle cable though, it happily recognizes it. any ideas what i need to do as i want to connect directly without the usb interface? thanks a lot.

Sounds like a software configuration problem in the card setup. Ths S-video port should be able to pick up analog vcr signals if set up properly.

This is kind of general since I don't have your equipment. Some where in the card setup should be options for the IN/OUT ports on the card. First make sure the s-video port can get both in and out signals. Most do. Make sure it is active and not disabled somewhere in the software. You can also try to remove it in device manager , then let Windows reinstall it to make sure any drivers are installed properly. Hope this helps some.

Made an error in initial post. I'd say the Pinnacle software is set up for the USB interface. The reason for the special cable. Do the instructions say you have the option of direct hookup with S-Video and RCA cables? Pinnacle's tech assistance may have a quick answer for you, have you tried them yet?

brobear, thanks for your input. i havent checked with pinnacle yet. im trying to find a way to do this without the pinnacle usb interface so i can hook up my new vcr which as s-video directly into my pc. i have windows xp (if that helps!!!) and while checking my system last night, i discovered that the video card is called "legacy" or some such thing. when i hook up my pc to my vcr via svideo and try to capture, it says there is no capture device on my system. i know that i do have the WDM driver installed on my system. im truly going nuts! :)

and i forgot to add that i can hook up via svideo from the vcr through the pinnacle usb interface to the pc. im just tryng to eliminate the usb middle ground process. if i use the pinnacle way, it uses its driver or something to recognize my vcr. if i unhook it though, my system cant see my vcr.

Taking a few days off, but I'll try to help here if I can. Don't want to leave anyone hanging. Very often software is set up in a proprietary manner. That simply means the software is set up by the company to work a particular way. I'd say that your software is set to read from the USB port. I could be wrong (often am accordin to the missus), but that is a question you need to ask the provider's tech assistance. If it isn't, they should be able to assist in the hookup you desire.
As you're hooking up a VCR, I doubt you're going to loose any speed or quality with the USB throughput. If you haven't already, give the USB port hookup a chance. After all that is what the company suggested with the special hookup cable. Subtle, aren't they. (You'll still be sending the quality S-Video and RCA type audio to the PC)
