Right ...
I have recntly upgraded my conection to 1meg aol platinum but still have really slow download speed only 150k sometimes i have had 250+ when downloading off websites but when downloading bit torrents only reaches maybe 30k is this normal i herd summit about my port config ....but im using widdows xp and dunno how to change this someone would help i would appreciate it

go to control panel, network settings, network conection and if there is like a pic of a lock on the connection then there is the firewall...right click it and go to advanced and turn off the firewall

30k isn't that bad at all. I mean it only takes around 3 hours for a 500 MB file, and maybe with more popular files you'll get up to 60 kbs.

Also, try doing tweaks in the forums at www.bandwidthplace.com

yea but with a 1 meg thou mate you should expect higher than that shouldnt you?? or not im new to this like im using aol and cant change port settng or nothing any ideas?

One true fact about AOL:

It's a total bullshit service. AOL takes away your computer and never gives it back.

OK chaps I HAD to reply to this message.

First off id like to say that AOL are known as a bad isp to go with. However 60% of the people who say that AOL are bad usually have not bothered actually trying the service oout. these people are the ones best not to ask for help becauseall they know is what they read about other people being upset about aol.

Secondly a lot of problems from the aol service can be fixed by simply doing a bit of research on your own part. I have been with aol now for 4 years. My first 3 years were dial up and i never had any problems whatsoever to do with myh connection. I agree that afew times i called up for some information about stuff AOL werent that helpful. But that is only a few isolated times.

The biggest problem that people have with aol is their software.. Mainly because at the moment most people dont realise taht you dont actually have to use their browser..

However If like me you took the time to wade through all the bullshit material about people hating aol and actually found out some info about how to use aol without their software then you too would be having the great connection speeds I have ALWAYS had from aol.

When i upgraded to 512kb broadband AOL I noticed that the connection wasnt by far that great. This led me to beleive that the browser which i used to leave running had some impact on the bandwidth of my connection.

So after reading lots of people saying you cant use aol without having the browser active i took it upon myself to prove these people wrong. Firstly I called up aol to find out that if i found a way around their browser if this would be legal.. They confirmed it would be fine so long as i payed my monthly fee.

Solution: All you gotta do is install your connection to aol manually do not install the software. When you are setting up your modem connection all you have to do is supply your aol usename and password to the windows connection settings.

If you download the adsl modem drivers and run the setup this will set up the modem to run on line 0,38 or something like that. all you have to do is set up your internet connection manually through network connection settings add new connection. your username would be something like "name@aol.com" and just put your password into the password box.

Anyway. After doing all this I tested my conection download speeds etc to see if i had managed to get any gain in performance.. Beleive me when i tell you I Much better download speeds. If you set your connection up like this you can use drtcp to set your mtu and stuff. after i set my Mtu to 1400 and tcp receive window to 13600. Using the tweak utility on dslreports.com i confirmed that these settings were perfect.

Soon this week i too will be upgrading to 1mb aol and all im gonna have to do is set my mtu to 1500 and i shoudl still be getting super cool speeds.
