Guys Guys, let me start off by stating that ive been downloading since broadband became affordable.

I have used DC, napster, kazaa, kazaa lite, BT , Usenet, IRC and the best which i still use AOL.

Now you might think, aol sucks!!! yeah sure it doest however when downloading from aol you have someone send you files with 15meg attachments, and download from the aol servers which are a steady 2mbit+ down always.

Im new to this forum so im not sure if this has been said a1000 times, if this is the case well i apologize.

I see everyone here using kazaa and BT and this other SLOW stuff. Anyways if you have questions and how-tos ask and ill tell ya, LAter.

I dont think its been said at all ;-)

I guess whatever works for you .... my cable service just got upgraded from 3Mbits to 4Mbits and now to 5Mbits and when Im downloading off FTP and IRC im always downloading at 4.9Mbits-5.5Mbits so I personally cant see why I would ever want to consider AOL but I guess to each their own! :)

If it works for you More power to you.
I had nothing but grief with AOL they are too intrusive for my taste.

Artificial intelligence is no match for natural stupidity.

you go on certain IRC channels, request a list from a server, this list will be sent to your email on aol
I cant say for the rest of of them but for myself, I dont bother with lists. I know what I want when I sign on the channel and if you hang around enough, you dont have to request anything anymore.

lets say the file you want is "dethh dvdr" which has not been released on blockbuster for at least 2 more weeks"
Let's be cautious of how far we deviate to piracy discussion.

this file is 4.3 gigs split onto 325 15gig rar files and some par files for if youre missing a couple files, im sure you're familiar with smartpar.
This is the way things are done on newsgroups (and I personally cant make heads or tails of that stuff) but on IRC and more so on FTP, the files are kept massive on the order of 700/1.5/2.3 gigabytes at a time. Sure it would be faster to get an incomplete portion by getting a single file or two but (a) the boughts are fast anyways and (b) both IRC and FTP have resume functionality.
Quote:
download the 15 meg attachments at speeds that no one else offers, let be real, on IRC you have to wait forever on a queue, with aol the emails are transfered instantly cause they have already been uploaded to the aol servers before there ofered to the public.
1. Im slightly confused: do you mean AOL newsgroups?
2. You know those bots that have 500 person queues? Ya well there is a reason they have such massive queues. The reason is because they can xfer 1GB in 20-30 minutes. FTP is much like that too (obviously depending on the server) but 1GB usually comes in in about 25-30 minutes. Personally I dont think AOL (or anything else for that matter) will match FTP/IRC on a large scale like that. But as I was saying, I dont mind waiting in a 500 person queue in position 400 if I jump 20-30 positions every couple of minutes. Those queues empty faster than you think.

In a way im trying to share what I know, you wont be sorry if you learn from this, dont be closed minded. and AOL does not keep more info than your current ISP
Commendable and although I'm not close-minded I seriously doubt the AOL newsgroup (is it a newsgroup you are talking about) has anything to offer me -- even if it was as fast as IRC/FTP, I dont wanna be clicking on 325 individual files when I can just click on one.

AOL does not keep more info than your current ISP, so forget about
Very very true perhaps the most important wakeup call statement you've said! :D Although AOL does have a back track record -- at least it was found out how much and what kind of info they were keeping on you. We cant say that for all ISPs which keep shitloads of information on you.

Dethh:
Perhaps you have a valid point with IRC. I dont agree but I'm open-minded. You still havnt addressed FTP :P For someone who hits up on the order of 20GB a day consistent im slow to change my ways :P

Padon me, im not a newsgroup man but isnt Usenet a newsgroup which is what Dethh has been alluding to?

Ok this is a long one.

You need the list to know what files to requesr, for example, if you want a file that has been broken into 300 rars, its broken into numbers, the command you would give the server on the irc channel is " !server send deth 1-300" then he you get the 300 attachments though aol.

I did not mention ftp because ftp's are usually slow unless you're downloading from someone whos on a big university or something.

here is the link to a site that explains things better.

once the emails are received, automatic aol will do the downloading automatically. By the way if anyone tries this time use 8.0 .

Praetor give it a shot, im sure u'll like it, another cool thing is all the ppl like deviance and razor911 etc.. make their releases primarily on IRC (aol). good luck.

lol wouldnt it just be simpler to get a single file -- single large files xfer faster than multiple small files. Furthermore, ok, so I get 300 emails each with 15MB attatchments .... that would be a serious clog on my email account. I get 200-460 emails a day anyways, i dont want uneccesary emails :P (and t2k2 makes a good point: what if i'm dealing with say a 6GB download? i really dont want 410 files when i dont have to)

I dunno what FTPs you have had dealings with with every single ftp i've dealt with (except for the one hosting my webpage :P) is more than capable of chucking out files to me at speeds easily covering 2 megabytes/sec.

I dunno if you realize it or not, AOL is an ISP and IRC is, in this context, a protocol and IRC does not imply AOL by any means. One can access IRC via any other isp. Furthermore, with an average download spead of 350-700 kbytes/s at home and 2-4 megabytes/sec elsewhere, i think im more than set (translation: i'm open-minded enough to have a civilized discussion but i'm not going to be converted anytime soon).

Oh and just a curiosity... isnt AOL a 56K service? (because thats the only AOL they have where I am).

Cheers.

Aol for broadband works with ur ISP.

The reason the files are split up is cause they have to be sent through attachments, the max size being 15Mb.

You wouldnt use the SN that you use for emails, u create a separate one just for this stuff.

also since you're downloading broken files through aol no one's tracking this stuff right now, aol does not give a cojone about his.

I started this thread cause i thought ide share the knowledge sort of speak but it looks like ppl here are too novice to care or too closed minded are wanna blend in by doing what everyone else is doing, i say the top 3 dl kings roght now are AOL, IRC and usenet. I preffer aol myself. Im not gonna post more cause it becoming useless. Cheers Praetor.
