Can't read DVDs faster than 1 or 2x?

I have been told that I need a patch or need to know the trick for reading dvd's faster than 1 or 2x. i.e Plextors you can hold down the eject button. I have a Digital Research Technologies Model DDVDRW8D. Any ideas on how I can backup DVD's on this model without wating 1.5 hours for the DVD to just complete step 1 of 2?
Never think about the future, it comes soon enough...

Two choices,
Search for a hacked firmware that will allow your burner to rip at full speed or,
Get an inexpensive DVD-ROM such as the Lite-On 166S that will rip at full speed right out of the box.
I have the Plextor PX-708A and it will unlock the rip speed after holding the eject button for three seconds but I'm not aware of any other burners that have a similar feature. I use my Lite On 166S to rip anyway, less wear and tear on my burner :)

I have the Plextor PX-708A, also. I have to act dumb here, but the only thing that I can figure is, you hold the door closed while you are depressing the eject button for 3 seconds?
I just want to know in case my DVD-ROM reader bites the dust. I don't use the Plextor for reading anyway. I only use it to burn.

Take Nephilum's second suggestion
Get an inexpensive DVD-ROM such as the Lite-On 166S that will rip at full speed right out of the box, and go one better, get a fast combo-drive (DVD/CDRW drive) there's only about $10 in their price differences and you take the stress off your DVD burner.

Page 39 of the manual for the PX-708A - "SpeedRead" :)
1) Make sure tray is closed and empty.
2) Press and hold eject for three seconds after which the LED will blink three times.
3) Release the eject button and the tray will eject with SpeedRead being enabled.
Pretty kewl, eh? The only stinker is that it resets when you eject the disc so you have to do the "three-second" thingy each time. I only used it to do some read tests and was able to get between 8X and 10X with my 708A.

My, Samsung SM-352 Compo drive reads and rips DVDs for burning as fast as my plextor, and burns CD-Rs faster for about a 5th of the price. Save the much better Plextor, and use a combo drive instead for simple needs.

Recap, when I say it rips as fast as my Plextor, I mean about as fast, and burns CD_Rs perhaps a little faster.

I haven't messed with hacked firmwares myself and am not very familiar with your particular make/model of drive but you may try here:

There's a very good chance that your drive is actually manufactured by a company other than Digital Research. What does Device Manager list the drive as?

If you're ripping with your burner, most only read at 2X. Some movies read slower than others. If you've checked your aspi layers, and you've checked to see if DMA is running and none of that worked then you need a new DVD reader.

If you look the drive up in the Videohelp.com database ( http://www.videohelp.com/dvdwriters.php?DVDnameid=189&Search=Search&list=0#comments ) it's been reported to be the same as an Optorite DD0401 / SANYO CRD-BPDV3. You could see if there's firmware for either of those drives that will help, but to be honest after the thread I remember from some months back about problems with Optorite DVD burners, I'd personally be hesitant to switch firmwares if it's burning at the correct speed. If you do a search in for Optorite (with no time limitation) you can scroll down and see what I mean.
I'd go with the other option and get a DVD-ROM drive, and I second the suggestion of the Lite-On 166S. It can rip a single layer DVD in 6 minutes or less and a dual layer DVD takes about 2-3 times as long. I only paid $30 for mine a couple of months ago, so the price seems about right too.

I think that you're going to find that you need a faster DVD-ROM. Like many when Sony released the first dual format DVD +R/-RW the DRU-500, I wanted one but I soon discovered that it will rip at only 2X. In fact most DVD burners that are than 6 to 8 months old can only rip at 2 times. You can buy a 16X DVD-ROM for about $30 and add $15 to that and you can get a Lite-on combo drive that also burns CDs at about 48X. Updating your bios isn't going to make your DVD burner rip any faster and unless you know what you're doing you might screw it up permanently. An exception of course would be if the bios comes in a executable format. If your bent on doing this then make sure you get the right bios.
