I just had to post. I have been sitting at this damn comp for days/weeks/years trying to work out how to rip DVD's and put them onto CDR's etc and I have looked at so much information that the screen now just looks like squiggly lines!
I have been reading so much that my brain has gone into overload. And a funny thought struck me about myself and maybe the people on this site: I am spending so much time trying to figure out how to record a movie that I haven't watched a film in ages!
Sort of defeats the purpose don't you think!lol

I guess you have been reading for a long time. Most people gave up on CDR's and now burn to DVD. (LOL)
All kidding aside, it is quite simple if you have the right setup. Don't try to make it more difficult than a simple rip and a simple burn. Once you get the hang of it you will be able to get into editing.
Good Luck and who knows, you might even have time to watch one. HeHeHe

There're a few films that I own that I've yet to watch, but that's what time is for. If you're having a problem burning or you're spending way too much time figuring out how to do it, then something you are doing obviously isn't working. Perhaps you've a hardware or operating system configuration problem, who can really tell if they're not there to witness them? Let me make this clear, if anyone is spending more than an hour and a half to back-up the average 2 hour film, then their skills and understanding of how to do it need's improving, or their equipment need's upgrading. Further more, if the guides here don't do it for you in a few days with the help and advice of its members, then you might want to consider a new pursuit, or hobby, or perhaps you need to take your time, give it a little longer, and with patience you'll get there.

I got a confession to make. I have spent months trying to learn about vcd's etc but I don't have a dvd burner. I have a Samsung cdrw/dvd sm and have just realised that maybe I should splash out on a reasonable dvd burner because ultimately that's where I will end up.
I did see a burner in PC World - uk chain shop - for £80.00 but I was being too tight to buy it and anyway it's probably crap. Any good recommendations for a reasonably priced burner with software that's easy to use?
As far as taking an hour and a half to burn a film or not understanding the process goes; when a person first starts out they find a site and the members say you must have this prog or that prog, then you follow links etc and before you know it you have 5 burners, 10 players and loads of various progs on your comp that you have no idea how to use!
I think I will uninstall everything apart from the programmes recommended by Afterdawn and follow your instructions and see where I go from there.

I dunnno about NEC, they might have gotten their act together but I've seen a LOT of really obscure problems with the NEC drives especially the 1300 and 2500 which seem to be the more popular models. Cheaper than Pioneer they are but i dunno if the risk is worth it. Pioneer does have its share of problems and isnt perfect but they have a solid user base and support is readily available.

2 links for you in the UK for cheap burners............personally I stick with Pioneer, but other OEM's are now producing quality writers such as NEC and LITEON.......all do the same and have good reliability....
Prices are reasonable, and have good aftersales support should you have any problems.....

Can't argue with the new Lite-Ons. Good performers, cheap and lots of cool tweaks/tools like K-Probe.

I have seen some LG 4x DVD-RW drives for $70, but I don't think I would trust it. The from what I have read here the Pioneer drives seem to be the least error prone.
Preator, you have gone back to CD's? I have almost considered to get away from the whole thing. Hard drives are about a Canadian dollar a GB, Using a good MPeg4 you could add an entire DVD library, CD library what ever to a single Computer media station.
