Pioneer has a firmware upgrde that seems to imply that you will be able to use 4X rated discs in a DVD-A04/-DVR/104 player. http://www.pioneeraus.com.au/multimedia/dvdrrwfw.htm
Check it out.

Here's a dirty little secret. Your drive may be capable of burning DVD-R at 2X. The problem is that you must have 2X rated media. Otherwise, you're screwed.

Yeah thats right Harvey but its the same with cd's too , cheap media doesn't like being written to at high speed its just that now they have included a check in the firmware , its probably to stop you making coasters . Does the new firmware mean you can write to 4x disks at 4x or just 2x , I thought it meant they are now recognised as being better than 1x disks .
Have you tried writing to a genuine 2x disk at 2x speed and got it to work in anything other than your 104 , I cant and from what I've seen other people cant either , I've seen many posts that say do not write at 2x for set top players . So is it true that 104's write 2x to their own standard because there was no standard to use and therefore nothing else can read them

It's not the media im using guys, been there and tried it. I have actually given the drive back to the shop. They have tried to fix it with the newest firmwear update but it has actually downgraded it so it can now only write at 1x.I have told them i will not expect it back as it was working as 2x when i gave it to them. The first problem was that the dive burnt disc inconsitently, which it still does.I'm having murders with them over this, i have told them to replace it with a drive thats equal to the a04 i asked for sony dru500a (which i dont know if i going to get it from this shop as they are being very rude and awarked),as i heard and know the a04 has many problems.
Thanks to those who replied to my question
and anymore opions on what new drive i should get please reply to this message
Thanks SCRIBBLA
