OK, i know torrents have been covered numerous times on these forums, but i want to start a thread that is like a start to finish forum, including tweaks etc.
I'm very new to BT's but think they are the bees knees.
I'd like for people to not ask any questions on this thread, making it a straight forward advice page.
So, just to get started, u should have ur adsl or other high speed line connected, you then download 'bit tornado' or something like it, then you go to suprnova.org or other sites the same and d/l ur torrents. As for tweaking, i think the ports for bit tornado are 6881-6999. Anybody who knows any different, please post here, thanks. (my speeds are horrific (1kb down, 5kb up) and i have a 1 meg line and a top-end PC etc)

Dude, if youve got a top end pc and a 1 meg line - why are u wasting your time with bittorrent? if it dont work for your - like a few people i know then, why dont u switch to IRC
i have a 512 Adsl line, and when downloading files i get speeds of 50-60kbps on almost every download, its highly configurable, the downloads are resumable and its very safe
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/47221
look at that guide just to get you started - Ps, follow Darthnips advice he knows a lot
if this doesent entertain your interest at all please post and i shall modify my post so you can ave your bittorrent appreciation thread.......

IRC is only safe if you don't piss anyone off.

toiletman, whys it only safe if u dont piss anyone off?.....
IRC (internet relay chat) is originally a chat client - but people have adapted the network to use it for transferring files, did u look at the link?
3 sites to use with IRC are
http://www.vcdquality.com/index.php
ircspy.com
and
packetnews.com
if u learn how to use it it can be very good

no T-man, it's only YOU that gets messed with on IRC, because you like pissing people off!!. acyaully yes it can be a scary place if you dont know whats going on. just think of yourself at the bottom of the food chain at first, you might get eaten, might not. IRC can be a wonderful thing, but it can also be a nightmare. as far as the question of "what is IRC". no one can be told what IRC is, you can only be shown :)

And when I finally got Glined, I was banned for around a month lol. I didn't really have an IRC client back then, just used eMule. Now the Liquid network is all screwy, am I right?
I kinda stopped after the Gline though :)

Use Shareaza, or IRC, Shareaza can handle BIT Torrents, and you get them faster and better then any "Bit torrent" client. With a 1 meg line, use IRC. I was getting the same speed (1kb, 5 kb) on my 256k/256k line so, it is just the client, use Shareaza, i get up to 60kb down, and it usually hovers around 35.

dunno about tar files but you use winrar to 'unzip' .rar files, then you can burn them to cd, if ur wanting to copy video files to cd for vcd's, i think the files need to be mpegs, or AVI not sure.

.tar is also a format supported by WinRAR.
