I have a 16X sony that is only showing up as a 1X. I cannot switch the controler to DMA for that particular device. It stays on PIO. I am running WinXP. Is this a setting issue or a firmware issue?

I'm going to assume that your player is connected to an IDE controller. You say that you cannot switch the controller to DMA for that particular device.
Is that in XP or in BIOS?

happen the same thing with me.
i was using an artec 16X and a philips rw on the secondary ide. the dvd as a master the rw has a slave. after hours of testing changes in bios, uninstalling in win, and even new firware on the dvd it was still in pio. I rememberd to try changing the dvd to slave and the rw to master. now they are both running in ultra dma mode 2.
