How do you start a chip installation business and where do you learn it?

I need to know where i can learn to install all different kinds of chips. I know like one chip bur i go to people's websites and i see that they have a private business and they can install all different chips. How do u learn to install all. I only have one ps2 so i cant install more than 1.

If you have to ask such questions perhaps you might not be ready to do such a thing professionally. I certainly would have second thoughts about sending you a machine to mod for me. Most people that do it start off small doing their own machines first and then maybe moving on to people they know. Honestly, if you can install one you can just about install any other as long as you have the directions.

Usually the web sites that sell the modchips will have the installation diagrams for them.

i only see diagrams, i need step by step instructions.

also is there a ps2 chip that plays xbox games?

The diagrams are the directions. Simply solder to each indicated point and no, there is no chip you can install into a PS2 that will allow it to play XBox games.

Hi
I need a website that tells me all the tools and specifications of equipment and how and where to use them with the mod chip. Do you have one in mind that? If it is specified for the Magic V that will be better. Also do you know how i can practice soldering before modding my ps2?

Hi Slack,

I'm an electronic engineer with lots of soldering experience. But when it comes to Surface mount components, I'll leave that work to the pro's.. Someone that has surface mount equipment.
I started to do my own chip install and found that it was much easier to give someone else $30 bucks to do it.. Really got tired of re-soldering those 8 wires that are together on the back of the board.. :(
But if you still want to start you own bussiness, then go for it.
You will need the following items..
Soldering Iron with Fine tip, something that can do a 1-2mil. pitch should be good. (not sure if Radio shack has these). It also should have an adjustable Heat range. Don't want to burn up the traces using too much heat..
Magnifing Glass, I have good eyes, but it makes it much easier to see the small surface mount leads..
Metal Pick, this is used to remove the surface coating from the traces and pins..
30ga. wire.. Telephone cable should be good.
Thats about it..
Oh yeah, instructions on the chips you'll install.
Think mod-chip.com has most instructions.. just search using google..

Now for practicing....
Get an old electronic component that still works..
Open it up and start soldering wires to it.. Not connecting them to anything.. after you do a few.. solders give the device a try.. If it works.. then you might have successfully soldered the wires..
Give them a pull, not too much.. if they fall off. do it again..
Best devices to start with would be something in an old computer that you might have lying around..
These items will have about the same surface mount spacing as the PS2..
Try soldering to some chip leads and also to the via's.. The via's are the small holes in the board..that connect the multi-layers together..

Then, will you warranty your work for DOA or 60 days?
Most people will want a free re-work if it's DOA..

Mod chipping in the US can get you into hot water. That is why the company I work for only recently started modding Xboxes (even though we have been repairing consoles for a little while). And even then, it is only for Linux cromwell BIOS.

I know that we have taken modded consoles in before because the installer damaged the system (or bad mod chip), but then we would not reinstall the mod for them.

That brings up another reason NOT to do it:
not too many vendors you can trust.
There are ALOT of clone modchips that you can get for $5 from Chinese manufacturers. These are absolute junk and can actually damage a system.

If it does damage your machine, would you really feel comfortable calling the FTC..
"Hey, I want to report a company that sold me a bogus mod chip..Huh? what is it used for? To copy pirated games and..what? no, you don't need to send the FBI here..Nevermind. Gotta go. -CLICK-"
