I've been backing up movies for about a year now and I've noticed that some of the DVDs I copy have difficulties playing back on my PC, yet work fine on the stand-alone player. They usually work fine until I either fast forward, rewind, or try to switch to a different menu. I currently have Ridata DVD+R media, but have used Memorex and Arita and gotten the same results. I use an HP DVD300i writer, usually with DVD Shrink and Nero 6 Ultra. If it's not one of these, could it possibly be the playback software? I use Cyberlink PowerDVD. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, this can be a bit frustrating at times.

It could possibly be a dirty laser lens in your PC drive that needs cleaning.

This may sound stupid, but how exactly do I clean the laser in my DVD drive? Both what do I use and how do I get to it?

They make little kits just for cleaning lenses which you should be able to find at any electronics store. Mine looks just like a disc but it has a little brush on the bottom that cleans the lens as it spins. Pretty high tech, huh?

If your PC is in a dusty environment it's also a good idea to blow it out with compressed air occasionally.
