DVR-104 problem?

I have a pioneer dvr-104 cd-rw/dvd-rw installed on a Sony VAIO RX-670. The cd-rw works fine and it plays DVDs fine. It will not, however, recognize a dvd-rw disc. I installed the newest firmware I could get from the sony site but still nothing. Does anyone have any suggestions or helpful comments?

You might see if there is a hacked firmware for the 104 drive. They usually work better the OEM firmware. Here is the site to check.
