Qualcomm shows off quad core 2.5Ghz mobile processor

article published on 14 February, 2011

Today at the Mobile World Congress event, Qualcomm will announce the next upgrade to their Snapdragon mobile processor chipset line. Using the new "Krait" micro-architecture, the APQ8064 chipset will run quad core, at an astounding 2.5GHz. Additionally, the processor will use even less battery than its predecessors. Qualcomm promises the processor will be 1200 percent faster than ... [ read the full article ]

Damn now this is a major jump. 75 percent less power is crazy but 2012 is still far.

Right when I'm thinking of upgrading and have waited years with my very old cell phone, I hear this. If this is true, I could maybe wait another year, maybe. The Adreno 300 series Graphics are supposed to be on par with Xbox 360/PS3 graphics, stated by Qualcomm. No way this isn't a die shrink/new microarchitecture if its 75% less power and 1200% performance. Even a 2.5 Ghz quad core at 32nm will still eat the crap out of a standard smartphone battery, and Qualcomm is still using 45nm for their dual-core CPU's. Even though it?s a mobile processor there?s no guarantee that it will come to smartphones, that would be awesome if it does though.

Samples of the processor will begin hitting manufacturers in early 2012.
So, this is a theoretical processor that does not exist, and will not exist (even as a prototype) for another year? Here I was almost excited...but it takes FOREVER to go from Samples to retail handsets; we probably won't see tablets with this until late 2012, and smart phones will have to wait to 2013 at least.

It'll exist.

Intel showed 10+ gigahertz CPUs 10 years ago but they don't sell them as the cooling system can't be made to work in a home system.

It's also the mainly reason why they have gone the multi-core route you can just go 4 3gig CPUs and say it's quicker than a 10gig single core CPU.

Anyway, everyone is talking about duel core and to have Qualcomm talk about quad core is a bit surprising really.
