Hi all

I was going to get a Plextor 708A (any other recommendations?) but I've been read alot about the new Dual-Layer writers out there. Does anyone think its worth the investment?

Also, am I going to notice the difference between burning my films to DL where all the DVD info is copied compared to normal DVD discs?

As far as I can tell on here, most people are happy with the results they get from DVDshrink etc!

Cheers

My Sony DRU-700A burns DVD-5s as well as anything else I've used, I'm just not prepared to pay $14.95 for DL media. I pulled it and reinstalled my Pioneer A-07 for now.

With DL, no compression will be required so the quality should be identical to the original. There is going to be a loss with Shrink, although in most cases it is not noticeable.

Yea, maybe it's best to wait. In a couple of years time Blue Ray may go into the consumer market. Or wait until the price of the DL media falls.

As for DVD quallity, some films you dont even need to compress once all the rubbish is taken out.

If you're not a freak of the "making of", "extra features", intros and menus you'll find out that the most of the movies can fit on a dvd 5 disc or with a little compression (which in most cases is not viewable), or at last you can split the original movie in 2 discs.
My opinion is to wait untill the whole pack changes (hardware, operating system, etc) before investing.
I'm still running perfectly with a p4/2Ghz machine and a p-708A burner (after some unsuccessful choises).

Dont forget that the media was a similar price when dvd r first came out, however the new NEC dual layer burner is cheap....saw it today at a fair for £70, but i think that you would only need a dl disc for the likes of LOTR...and i suppose is worth buying to use as a regular 8x+/-,with the occasional d/l.However there are 12x burners out there now...where do you stop??!!Havent seen any 12x media or d/l media anyway!!

pork pie,fish pie,cherry pie,hairy pie.Ill eat em all
