VOB to avi: is dvd2avi the best tool?

Vegas video works best with .avi files, as vob files don't show up with audio, and mpeg + wav file is too slow. I have extacted the vob files, and want to convert them to .avi.

I try using dvd2avi, but all that I get is a 2 GB wave file, and a 813 KB d2v file (neither of which Vegas seems to open). My questions are:

1. Is this the right tool to use?
2. If so, how do you get it to create the avi file?
